Dissecting the Semi-fictionalized HRW Report by Sachi Sri Kantha To paraphrase an aphorism of Einstein on 'quality,' "It's no use if the wrapper is of better quality than the meat it covers." In responding to the flurry of outbursts from the Eelam Tamil diaspora to the half-baked, mud-slinging report released this month, Human Rights Watch (HRW) stated: "Human Rights Watch investigations are based on qualitative rather than quantitative research" [Reuters report, March 16, 2006]. The two key words here are quality and research. Now, let me quote from an authority on research. To paraphrase an aphorism of Einstein on 'quality,' "It's no use if the wrapper…

Selling Women Short The society that we live is framed as a place where women and men have equal rights; however in reality we live in a society that treats women unequally and still looks at women as sexual objects and baby machines. Selling Women short primarily talks about the sex discrimination, sexual harassment, and low wage and pay differentials among workers at all levels at Wal-Mart. The author is telling the story of the true cost of the low price goods at Wal-Mart by mainly interviewing the plaintiffs who filed the "Dukes Vs. Wal-mart" case, which is the class-action suit against Wal-Mart by some of its female employees. Even though the "Dukes Vs. Wal-mart…

Tamil people around the world are being intimidated and threatened into giving money to Sri Lanka's Tamil Tiger rebels, according to a new report. The extortion of money from Tamils living in North America and Europe has been stepped up recently to fund a "final war", says Human Rights Watch. The rebels said the allegations were untrue and designed to discredit them. A recent upsurge in violence between the rebels and security forces in Sri Lanka has cost at least 120 lives. Sri Lankan officials and leaders of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) have agreed to curb the unrest and hold more talks in April on a threadbare truce. Fear …

சுதந்திரம், அபிவிருத்தி, தன்னம்பிக்கை கொண்ட தன்னிறைவு DEVELOPED INDIA Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. The President of India I have three visions for India. In 3000 years of our history, people from all over the world have come and invaded us, captured our lands, conquered our minds. From Alexander onwards. The Greeks, the Turks, the Moguls, the Portuguese, the British, the French, the Dutch, all of them came and looted us, took over what was ours. Yet we have not done this to any other nation. We have not conquered anyone. We have not grabbed their land, their culture, their history and tried to enforce our way of life on them. Why? Because we respect the…
