All this week The Agenda has been exploring the situation in Sri Lanka in the lead-up to the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Colombo from November 15 to 17.

Today's Sri Lanka is in large part defined by ethnic tensions between the country's Sinhalese majority and Tamil minority that resulted in civil war. And much of Canada's sizeable Tamil community came here in an effort to escape that war. So many Tamils, including the children of the first refugees and immigrants, remain very invested in the political situation on the island nation.

To get a sense of some of the perspectives in today's Tamil community about Sri Lanka and the Tamil Diaspora's role in helping Tamils still in the country, I spoke to three Tamils who have been involved in different community efforts around Sri Lanka: Bahi Kandavel, Vani Selvarajah, Siva Vimalachandran. We discussed the state of human rights and political rights in Sri Lanka, the issue of postwar reconciliation and accountability, the relationship between Canada's Tamil and Sinhalese communities, and more.

You can also watch a similar conversation I had with members of Canada's Sinhalese community

And to get a better sense of the state of political advocacy and discourse in Canada's Tamil community, watch an interview with Amarnath Amarasingam, postdoctoral fellow at the York University Centre for Refugee Studies.
