Dear All,

Following the Prime Minister David Cameron visiting the Tamil homeland and seeing the suffering of Tamils in the heavily militarised North of Sri Lanka during his visit in November 2013, the Prime Minister said: “Let me be very clear, If an investigation is not completed by next March, then I will use our position on the United Nations Human Rights Council to work with the UN Human Rights Commissioner and call for a full, credible and independent international inquiry.”

During the war that ended in May 2009, the UN reported over 70,000 innocent Tamil civilians were killed in just the last 5 months.  146,679 people still remain unaccounted for.Furthermore, the events that took place before, during and since the war provide a prima facie case that genocide is occurring in Sri Lanka: a charge that must also be investigated by an independent international investigation.

The British Tamils Forum is calling upon the British people to support constituents run ‘Petition Campaign - Independent International Investigation in Sri Lanka’ to the members of parliament to press this matter in Parliament and with the Prime Minister on behalf of the Tamil Community in the UK.

Please find the attached petition for you to print and collect at your constituency/work/friends/family/religious places/schools and any other.

British Tamils Forum have printed 10, 000 copies for you to use if you wish to collect them from our office as below;

Independent International Investigation in Sri Lanka

To:  ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Further to the Prime Minister David Cameron visiting the Tamil homeland and seeing the suffering of Tamils in the heavily militarised North of Sri Lanka during his visit in November 2013, I welcome the Prime Minister's call for an independent international investigation into war crimes and crimes against humanity in Sri Lanka.

While in Sri Lanka, the Prime Minister said: “Let me be very clear, If an investigation is not completed by next March, then I will use our position on the United Nations Human Rights Council to work with the UN Human Rights Commissioner and call for a full, credible and independent international inquiry.”

During the war that ended in May 2009, the UN reported over 70,000 innocent Tamil civilians were killed in just the last 5 months.  146,679 people still remain unaccounted for. Furthermore, the events that took place before, during and since the war provide a prima facie case that genocide is occurring in Sri Lanka: a charge that must also be investigated by an independent international investigation.

I would like you, as my Member of Parliament, to ensure that the UK Government keeps its promise and demands an independent international investigation at the next UNHRC meeting in March 2014. To date, the Sri Lankan Government has not demonstrated that it is either willing or capable of conducting an independent investigation into crimes committed during the war. Please write to the Prime Minister and continue to press this matter in Parliament on behalf of me and my family, who reside in your constituency.
