Continue offensives against LTTE - JHU

The Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) yesterday urged President Mahinda Rajapkse and defence authorities that control of Elephant Pass and Poonaryn was essential for the security of the Jaffna peninsula The government should not give in to pressure by certain sections of the international community and ease its counter attacks on the LTTE.

`We praise the soldiers who fought bravely to capture Sampur to ensure the security of Trincomalee and we appreciate President Rajapakse, Defence Secretary and commanders of the three forces who never departed from the main aim and did not give into pressure from the peace merchants and their foreign masters,` JHU Policy Compiler Patali Champaka Ranawaka said at the JHU`s special convention on current situation of the country held at New Town Hall Colombo.

`Now, there is only one LTTE stronghold in the East that is the Kokkadicholai camp. The troops must continue their offensives and must sweep the LTTE from the East. Only that will ensure the safety of the Easterners. There is no security or safety as long as the LTTE`s Kokkadicholai camp exists,` Ranawaka said.

`The Mavil Aru attack was a month ago. Every subsequent attack, in Muttur, Jaffna, Vavuniya, Kaddaparichchan and Sampur by the LTTE has been repulsed successfully. The LTTE is in dire straits. All that hype of LTTE`s fighting capability is nothing but big lie. Thus, the forces must continue while the LTTE is weak and should not allow the enemy to raise its head,` Ranawaka said.

In this situation, some foreign and local peace brokers propose that a ceasefire between the LTTE and the government. Senior military officials have informed the JHU that there is no need for a ceasefire. They are opposed to a ceasefire. They believed that if the government troops hold their positions they can completely destroy the LTTE, Ranawaka said.
