The screening facilities set up at Sri Lanka's Colombo international airport at Katunayake to screen incoming passengers to prevent bringing the deadly Ebola virus to the island are now fully operational, health official said. According to the Director General of Health Services, Dr. P.G. Mahipala, the screening facilities set up by the Health Ministry last week at the country's main airport will monitor the visitors to the country to observe whether they are showing symptoms of Ebola.

"A strong surveillance system to monitor and screen all tourists arriving at the airport has now been established," the official told the state's official newspaper Sunday Observer. He said that special counters have been set up to screen people 24 hours a day.Any person showing symptoms of the disease will be immediately isolated and sent to the Infectious Disease Hospital (IDH) in Angoda where his condition will be carefully monitored, the official said.

Dr. Mahipala has assured that health officials are fully prepared to meet any emergency situation,. "Our doctors and nursing staff have been trained and know what to do if an emergency arises. The Epidemiology Unit will be in overall charge of these operations," the official was quoted as saying.

The report further said that at the emergency meeting convened last week on the instructions of Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena, it has been decided to improve facilities at the Negombo Base Hospital immediately to accommodate patients carrying the virus. Sri Lanka's Foreign Employment Promotion and Welfare Minister Dilan Perera said measures are being taken to bring back around 200 migrant workers currently employed in Liberia due to the fast spreading Ebola epidemic in the West African region.
