Japan to set up coal-fired power plant

Visiting top officials of the Japan Bank for International Co-operation (JBIC) have expressed willingness to set up the third coal fired power plant in Sri Lanka, The Islandreliably learns. JBIC Managing Director Yagima Koichi, who visited Power and Energy Ministry has assured Power and Energy Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi, Senior ministry officials and the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) high ranking officials, that the Japanese government will provide the latest technology to boost the country’s power sector.

   

Power and Energy Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi, while expressing major tie ups with the Japanese government, said she had been assured of best of technologies at a minimum cost. She said that Japan was renowned for environmental friendly technology, which she termed was also a point focused in the government policy document, ‘Mahinda Chintana.’ Minister Wanniarachchi thanked the Japanese delegation for development assistance.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa, having successfully concluded a 30-year-old war, had launched several major development projects enabling the country achieve success in many fields, Minister Wanniarchchi said.

The Minister said the top Japanese delegation visited here as a result of the visit made by the Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to Sri Lanka recently. During the discussions between the Prime Minister of Japan and Sri Lankan President, attention had been drawn to the development of the Power and Energy Sector in Sri Lanka, she said.

JICA, Financial Expert Deepa Salvan, the First Secretary of the Japanese Embassy in Sri Lanka and Head of the Economic Cooperation unit of the Japanese Embassy, K. Iwase took part in the discussions besides Additional Secretaries of the Ministry of Power and Energy, M. I. M. Rafeek, Upali Deranagama and Kapila Jayasekera and the General Manager of the CEB, Shavindranath Fernando.
