India’s Ramanathapuram District police have arrested five people, including three Sri Lankan Tamils with arms such as air-guns, sickles and crowbars when they were proceeding to Madurai after visiting Rameswaram in a car, The Hindu newspaper reported. Accompanied by S. Vijayakumar (52), an assistant director in the Kerala film industry, who was reportedly facing cheque bounce and criminal cases, the Lankan Tamils, who came from Chennai, were on their way to Kerala via Madurai after visiting a friend in Mandapam and offering worship at the Rameswaram Temple, when the police arrested them at the check post.

The check post police, who were routinely checking the vehicles, stopped the car bearing Kerala registration number and arrested the five persons after they gave contradictory replies, police said. The police seized two sickles, one air gun resembling a pistol and two crowbars, besides the car and identified the arrested as M. Thambiraja (37), S. Jesudasan (33), K. Jayachandran (41), all Lankan Tamils and D Bagyaraj (24) from Mangudi in Tiruchi.

The Q branch police interrogated them and found that they were involved in house breaks, dacoity and human trafficking cases. Q Branch Inspector of Police R Kennedy said they had used the crowbars and other arms to loot locked houses and Tasmac shops, and the airgun to scare people. They had committed some dacoities in Tiruchi with the help of Bagyaraj, he said.

The interrogation also revealed that the Lankan Tamils had arranged a country boat in Thiruvananthapuram with the help of Vijayakumar to arrange for human trafficking of Lankan Tamils to Australia. The arrangement of the boat also seemed to be a fraud as they intended to collect money from gullible Lankan Tamils, Mr. Kennedy said.

On being handed over, the Kenikarai police produced the accused before a Magistrate Court here on Wednesday and remanded them in judicial custody. A Jesu, Inspector of Police said they were initially arrested under section 41(2) (preventive custody) and later under section 399 (making preparation to commit dacoity) of Indian Penal Code. The Lankan Tamils were taken to Puzhal central prison, while two others were lodged in the district jail, he said.
