LTTE air power, a global threat – Defence Secretary

Hours after the LTTE air attack on the Katunayake Air Force base, Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa called on the international community to help arrest the ‘sinister’ trend where a terrorist outfit had acquired air power for the first time in the conflict’s history.

“The LTTE acquisition of air power poses a global threat since international terrorist organizations have a tendency to follow the LTTE blindly as they did in the case of suicide missions” the Defence Secretary told the Daily Mirror yesterday.

He recalled how he, about six months ago, informed the US and Indian envoys of Sri Lanka of the possibility of such an attack by the LTTE and emphasized the need to squash such plans at the outset.

Secretary Rajapaksa said the Sri Lankan government hoped the international community would realize the gravity of the situation at least now and make substantial moves to annihilate this global threat.

“All sovereign nations should take this incident, not as an isolated one but as what is to be expected from all major terrorist groups if not steps are taken to eliminate right now” he said

Forty suspects taken in

More than 40 suspects were arrested during a joint cordon search operation by 23 police stations in Colombo in the aftermath of the air strike on the Katunayake Air Force Base, early yesterday.

The suspects were men from upcountry estates who failed to prove their identity.

Colombo DIG , Rohan Abeywardene said police and security forces have stepped up security in the city. He said the search operation covered all public places including bus stands, railway stations and bridges.
