நிலவின் தென் துருவத்தில் சுமார் 100 பில்லியன் ஆண்டுகளாக சூரிய வெளிச்சம் படாத அநேக பள்ளங்களும், குகைகளும் உள்ளதாகவும், அவற்றை ஆராய்ந்தால் சூரிய குடும்பத்தின் தோற்றம் குறித்து பல்வேறு அரிய தகவல்கள் கிடைக்கும் என்றும் இந்திய செய்திகள் தெரிவித்துள்ளன.

மேலும், அங்குள்ள பள்ளங்களில் உறைநிலையில் 80 மில்லியன் டன் அளவுக்கு தண்ணீர் இருப்பதுடன், அதிக ஆற்றல் வாய்ந்த ஹீலியம், ஹைட்ரஜன், மீத்தேன் உள்ளிட்ட மூலக்கூறுகள் இருக்கின்றன. 

இப்போது பூமியில் தண்ணீருக்கு அடுத்தபடியாக எரிபொருள் தேவைதான் உலக நாடுகளுக்கு முக்கிய தேவையாக இருக்கிறது. எனவே, கதிர்வீச்சு அபாயமில்லாத அதிக ஆற்றல் கொண்ட ஹீலியம் மூலக்கூறுகளை பூமிக்கு கொண்டு வருவதற்கான முயற்சிகள் முன்னெடுக்கப்படுகின்றன.

இதனால் சமீப காலமாக மிகவும் இருள் நிறைந்த நிலவின் தென் துருவம் அதிக முக்கியத்துவம் பெற்று வருகிறது. அந்த குறிப்பிட்ட பகுதியை அடைவதற்காக அமெரிக்கா, சீனா உட்பட பல்வேறு நாடுகள் முயற்சிசெய்து வருகின்றன. 

குறிப்பாக, 2024 ஆம் ஆண்டில் சீனா தென்துருவத்தில் ஒரு ஆராய்ச்சி நிலையம் அமைக்க திட்டமிட்டுள்ளது. அதேபோல், அமெரிக்காவும் விண்வெளி வீரர்களை நிலவில் தரையிறக்கி ஆய்வுகளை மேற்கொள்ள தீவிரம் காட்டி வருகிறது. 

இவ்வாறு நிலவில் ஆதிக்கம் செலுத்துவதற்கான போட்டிகள் வல்லரசு நாடுகளுக்கு இடையே நடைபெறும் சூழலில்தான் தென் துருவத்தில் சந்திரயான் -2 விண்கலத்தை தரையிறக்க இந்தியா திட்டமிட்டது. அந்த வாய்ப்பு இறுதிகட்டத்தில் கைநழுவியது பெரும் ஏமாற்றமாகியுள்ளது. 

ஏனெனில், இந்த திட்டம் வெற்றி அடைந்திருந்தால் நிலவை பற்றிய பல அரிய ரகசியங்கள் வெளியுலகுக்கு இந்தியா மூலம் தெரிய வந்திருக்கும். சர்வதேச விண்வெளி அரங்கில் நமக்கான வர்த்தக மதிப்பும் உயர்ந்திருக்கும் என விஞ்ஞானிகள் இந்திய செய்திகள்  சுட்டிக்காட்டியுள்ளது.

Scientists find strange mass at moon's south pole

Three hundred kilometres below the surface of the moon lurks something massive — and scientists aren't completely sure what it is.

According to a study published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, the mass sits below the moon's South Pole-Aitken basin (SPA), a huge, oval-shaped impact crater on the far side of the moon that is 2,000 kilometres wide and several kilometres deep. (By comparison, the moon's circumference is roughly 11,000 kilometres.) The SPA is also the oldest basin on the moon, formed four billion years ago when something slammed into the celestial body.

Using data collected by NASA's Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory (GRAIL) mission and the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, scientists found that there is extra mass in that basin — and a lot of it.

"We estimate that the minimum mass is something in the order of 2x10¹⁸ kilograms," said Paul Byrne, the paper's co-author and an assistant professor of planetary geology at North Carolina State University. "Which is like two quadrillion tons."
