 Swamy wants Lanka to be federal

Chennai, May 5: Rejecting the devolution proposals of Sri Lanka's ruling party to solve the ethnic problem, Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy today said Tamils must get a federal constitution or a separate Tamil Eelam would become inevitable.

He told reporters here "those Indians who have consistently opposed the LTTE terrorism will equally oppose disguised or covert Sinhala hegemonism".

The devolution proposals of Sri Lanka Freedom Party had deeply disappointed all well-wishers of the island nation's territorial integrity and unfettered sovereignty, he said.

The call for a separate Tamil Eelam in the island had gained ground in the 1970s and 1980s, when the Sinhala majority parties consistently went back on signed agreements on devolution with the moderate democratic Gandhian leaders like Selvanayagam, Swamy said.

"The present proposals are showing the same mentality of retrogression and they are not even an improvement on what the Sinhala majority had offered in 1981", he said.

He also opposed the UK government's decision to send an emissary to negotiate a new ceasefire agreement between the Sri Lankan government and the LTTE, adding there was no legal basis for negotiating with a `terrorist organisation'.

Alleging that DMK was supporting LTTE activities in Tamil Nadu, Swamy said MDMK leader Vaiko was always speaking for Jaffna Tamils instead of Tamil Nadu people.

The issue of Jaffna Tamils was not an issue concering Tamils as the people living there migrated from Kerala and are following the same culture, he claimed. (Our Correspondent)
