Biloela child 'diagnosed with pneumonia'

A child flown to hospital in Perth from Christmas Island now has pneumonia, campaigners say, as the Home Affairs Minister maintained the Australian government is "investigating resettlement options" for detainees.

Karen Andrews said she "didn't want to disrupt negotiations" regarding the family, who currently are detained on Christmas Island after they were deported from Biloela, Queensland.

.

"We are going through the process now of investigating a range of resettlement options in relation to a number of different circumstances here in Australia," she said.

"I can't make public commentary on that at the moment because I don't want to disrupt those negotiations."

Tharnicaa, three, who is the youngest member of the family deported from Biloela amid an immigration row, is being treated in Perth after being flown there yesterday.

She was diagnosed with sepsis after almost two weeks of feeling unwell, but campaigners say she now has pneumonia.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the family will continue to get medical care but would not comment on the case.

"This is a matter going through the court's process that they've initiated and there are some present medical issues involving the family and they will continue to receive every medical care," he said.

Meanwhile, Campaign Group Home to Bila, said on Twitter a new diagnosis had been made.

"Tharni has been diagnosed with (untreated) pneumonia," it said.

"We think this caused her blood infection. How did this go undiagnosed for so long that she became so ill?"

A friend of the family earlier told Today she's "devastated" to see the young child in hospital.

Angela Fredericks said she spoke to the little girl's mother, who is with her, last night, and said she was "very distressed".

"We were trying to distract her, I was actually doing a puppet show over the phone," Ms Fredericks told Today.

"But they've got her on antibiotics, intravenously.

"They're trying to find the source of the infection, which is very worrying.

"But we're hoping (for a) new day today, and we are hoping that we can get some answers and get this little girl better."

Tharnicaa fell ill on May 25 but her mother said detention staff brushed off requests for her to be taken to hospital, instead giving her Panadol and Nurofen, Ms Fredericks said.

When the young girl's temperature eventually passed 40 degrees, she was given medical attention.

After a chest x-ray came back with concerning results a medical evacuation was arranged.

Tharnicaa was flown via medivac flight from Christmas Island to Perth on Monday before an ambulance took her to Perth Children's Hospital for urgent treatment.

The little girl's Tamil parents, Priya and Nades Murugappan, and her older sister Kopika had been living in Biloela, Queensland, seeking asylum from Sri Lanka.

The family's home in the rural Queensland town was raided at 5am on March 5, 2018, and the family has been held in immigration detention ever since.

Ms Fredericks said when she saw a photo of Kopika giving Tharnicaa a kiss on the cheek while she was in the hospital, she felt "devastated" knowing she was unwell.

"Kopika, she is such a little protector, she would've been up there just trying to make it better, and trying to help her," she said.

"And when I spoke to Kopika last night and she was telling me how her little sister had been taken on a plane.

"For those girls, they've never been separated in their life. I know for Kopika she is very worried.

"They're three and a half hours away by plane from each other, so just the cruelty and knowing as well for Tharnicaa, talking to her last night, when I was talking to Priya, she was in the background going, 'Papa, papa, where is papa?'"

The family has been on Christmas Island since 2019.

Kopika and Tharnicaa were both born in Australia.

Sri Lanka Tamils are considered by many to be a persecuted minority in the country.
