TMVP to contest under ‘boat’ symbol

The Thamil Makkal Viduthalai Pulikal (TMVP) has been accepted and registered as a political party by the Elections Commissioner and will contest the upcoming polls in the East under the ‘boat’ symbol, sources told the Daily Mirror yesterday.

A meeting was held between TMVP officials and the Elections Commissioner at the office of the Elections Commissioner in Colombo yesterday where the outfit headed by Karuna Amman and Pillayan were told that their documents seeking registration as a political party had been accepted.

Earlier the organisation had sought to register either under the name ‘TMVP’ or ‘National Party’ in order to contest the now highly controversial polls in the Batticaloa district after deciding not to join hands with the EPDP and several other Tamil parties which formed an alliance to face the elections, the Daily Mirror learns.

After splitting with the LTTE the party had discarded the "tiger" emblem, the armed struggle for a separate state and decided in 2007 to use the 'fish' as its election symbol, capitalising on the fame of the 'Batticaloa singing fish' and named its political headquarters in Batticaloa as ‘Meenagam’.

However the group which has an armed unit has been accused by many Human Rights organisations including Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International and NGOs of recruiting children, torture, assassinations and engaging in extortion in its war against the LTTE. RSF (Reporters Without Borders), has accused the TMVP of acting as death squads to muzzling local journalists and to silence those who oppose their point of view. The group is also accused of taking part in death squad activity against civilians.

However, a top official of the Elections Commissioner’s Department said though they interviewed the TMVP today regarding the registration as a recognized political party, they would take an official decision tomorrow.

“We will take an official decision in this regard on Wednesday,” he said. (ER)
