GUILTY VERDICTS FOR CHICKEN SHOP MURDER GANG

16:01 - 09 June 2008

Five Croydon gang members have been found guilty of stabbing a rival to death in a chicken shop. The masked killers from the Sri Lankan Jaffna Boys were convicted of murdering shelf stacker Prabaskaran Kannan, 28, at the Old Bailey this afternoon

Mr Kanna was slashed and stabbed in his head 31 times after being cornered in Chicken Cottage in Tooting.

He had been chased there through the streets by the gang, where he was set upon in front of horrified staff.

One gang member told takeaway worker Faheem Ahmed: 'Don't be afraid, don't call the police.'

The victim was found collapsed in the road outside and bled to death.

His friend Naresh Mylvaganam, 21, was severely beaten with a cricket bat in a nearby alley.

Vabeesan Sivarajah, 22, Aziz Miah, 20, Asif Kumbay, 20, and Kirush Nathankumar, 18, and were today all convicted of murder by an Old Bailey jury.

Mayuran Srivinayagam, 25, was cleared of murder and manslaughter but had earlier admitted two other charges.

Several of the gang burst into tears after the sentence was announced and they were given tissues by court staff.

The attack followed a long-standing dispute between the Croydon gang and the victim's gang, the Tooting Tamils.

The rivalry dated back to early 2006 when a Tooting Tamil was jailed for smashing a car windscreen belonging to the rival gang.

The Tamils had traded insults and been involved in a series of street clashes before the killing.

Before the murder on June 15 last year the Jaffna Boys challenged their rivals to a fight on their home turf in Tooting.

After drinking vodka and Jack Daniels they armed themselves with knives, sticks and broken bottles for the clash outside the Chicken Cottage on Upper Tooting Road.

Prosecutor Brendan Finucane QC said: "The victims saw a group of men running towards them and formed the intention that the group were carrying sticks or knives.

"They realised there was going to be trouble so ran towards the Chicken Cottage. They tried to escape from those who were chasing them by climbing over the counter and trying to get out of the back.

"But as they got towards the back they were attacked. A member of staff saw two males removing knives from a knife rack on the wall."

Mr Kannan was found lying unconscious in Mandrake Road behind the chicken shop.

Mr Finucane added: "He was lying on his back, his eyes were open and he was motionless.

"Near the left hand side of his body was a yellow handled knife with a ten inch blade."

Shivarajah, of no fixed address; Miah, of Sumner Road, Croydon; Srivinayagam, of Greyhound Terrace, Streatham; Kumbay, of Grasmere (corr) Road, Purley, and Nathankumar, of (549) Purley Way, Croydon, all denied murder.

They were also convicted of causing grievous bodily harm with intent to Naresh Mylvaganam and assault occasioning actual bodily harm on Mr Thanabalasingham.

Srivinayagam had admitted those two charges.

A sixth gang member Mahitharn Ratnasingham, 23, was formally cleared of the killing by Judge Martin Stephens QC at the close of the prosecution case.

He directed the jury to return a verdict of not guilty after deciding Ratnasingham had no case to answer.

Following the decision, the defendant admitted to attacking Mr Mylvaganam and friend Mr Thanabalasingham, 20.

Ratnasingham, of Lesley Grove, Croydon, admitted causing grievous bodily harm with intent and actual bodily harm, allegations which he had previously denied.

All the gang are due to be sentenced on July 7.
