A Canadian was among the 153 aboard a passenger jet that crashed into the Indian Ocean early Tuesday, according to airline officials.

Yemenia Air Flight 626 was en route from the Yemeni capital of San'a to the island nation of Comoros when it went down over the Indian Ocean between the southeastern African coast and Madagascar at about 1:50 a.m. local time, officials said.

Airline spokesman Capt. Mohammed al-Samairi said one Canadian was on the flight, according to the passenger list.

Al-Samairi declined to comment on the Canadian's gender or home base.

Officials said three bodies have been recovered, and a 14-year-old girl has also been pulled from the water alive.

Officials had initially reported the survivor as a male toddler. There is no word on other survivors.
