Tamil community appeals for the release of abducted humanitarian aid

workers

The Tamil community from the world over joined a chorus of voices calling

for the immediate release of ten (10) employees of the Tamils

Rehabilitation Organisation (TRO), who were abducted by 'government backed'

paramilitaries on Tuesday, 31 January 2006, in eastern Sri Lanka.

The TRO is a registered including most of the European and Scandinavian

Country as a Non-Governmental Organization (No. L 50706) and is registered

with the Consortium of Humanitarian Agencies (CHA), in Sri Lanka. As of 26

December 2004 TRO has been rendering urgent humanitarian assistance to all

those in the coastal areas of the North-East of the country who have borne

the brunt of the Tsunami disaster.

TRO was originally set up to provide relief, rehabilitation and development

to the war affected people of North-East Sri Lanka. The organization has

been in dedicated service to the people of the region for the last 20 years

and possesses exceptional knowledge of the grassroots reality, culture,

values, and aspirations of the people of the North-East. The organization

has approximately 3,500 local paid personnel across its 10 districts

offices, along with 16 international offices and several hundreds of

thousands of local and international volunteers. Further, TRO has strong

partnership arrangements with key UN and multilateral agencies,

international and local organizations and the Government of Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile a prominent paramilitary’s Official News website, neruppu.com,

has featured a news article that claims the kidnapped were all members of

the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). The Denmark based website,

operated by Mr. Mathi Kumarathurai, has been long known to be a base for

Sri Lankan paramilitary propaganda. 'The fact the website was able to

publish such an article is clear evidence pointing to the association of

the particular website with the paramilitaries,' a prominent Tamil activist

said. Several Tamil organisations, and the Diaspora Tamil population from

around the world have joined a chorus of voices calling for the Co-Chairs

of the Sri Lankan peace process, International Community and Humanitarian

Organisations to exert maximum pressure on the Danish authorities, to

approach the individuals operating the website and work for the release of

the humanitarian workers.
