Brigadier Udaya Nanaykkara confirming the travel restrictions said the measure had been taken due to security reasons including the prevention of infiltration of LTTE cadres …

Driving gets more dangerous with age, but older adults may be more vulnerable while walking on the sidewalk than behind the wheel, says a new study. Researchers who reviewed data on road accident deaths in the UK found that pedestrians over 70 were five times more likely to die from being hit by a car each time they went out than those age 21 to 29. But elderly drivers were no more likely to die on the road than those in their twenties. "The focus is usually on older drivers as a danger to themselves and other drivers," said Jonathan Rolison, who led the study at the University of Plymouth in the UK. But, he added, "the real issue isn't really safeguar…

Q It was widely believed that you would retire from politics after the end of your term. You also said it. In contrast, you are now planning to make a comeback. Why did you decide to do so? I don’t see any need for me to retire from politics. First, the country is in need of our political ideology. That is nothing but the policy of Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP). Accordingly, I feel the need to engage in active politics to find solutions to today’s problems and in the interests of the country’s future. On the other hand, I am fit both physically and mentally. Those who are older than me have been in politics. Still, there are some people in politics, who are older th…

In an exclusive interview to Headlines Today, LTTE political head B. Nadesan has endorsed the position taken by the AIADMK-led alliance in Tamil Nadu on the Sri Lankan Tamils' Issue. AIADMK leader J. Jeyalalithaa has been one of the staunchest critics of the Tamil Tiger rebels in the state and the LTTE has so far rarely made any direct comment about her. Breaking convention, Nadesan praised Jeyalalithaa's recent statements on the situation in Sri Lanka. "Leaders of ADMK alliance are very much involved in the recent upsurge in Tamil Nadu towards our people. India’s prime minister Manmohan Singh said he had agreed with visiting French President Nicolas Sarkozy to go beyond a “buyer-seller relationship” with France viewed merely as one of several international arms suppliers. Sarkozy also said negotiations had been finalised on a planned bilateral accord on nuclear power plants, a key area of French expertise and seen as crucial to India’s effort to…
