One Australian state has made it illegal for drivers to have any physical contact with a mobile phone while driving. The law in New South Wales is unique because a motorist no longer has to have the phone in their hands to be considered an infraction. In an aim to reduce distractions while driving, the new law now requires phones to be placed in a holder on the dashboard or be on bluetooth through the car's speakers. However, Simon Washington, professor at Queensl…

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa rejected British concerns Leaders of Commonwealth nations are to issue final statements at the end of a summit in Colombo overshadowed by a row over alleged human rights abuses. A call by British Prime Minister David Cameron for an independent inquiry into alleged war crimes was criticised by Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa. Mr Cameron left the summit in the Sri Lankan capital early. On the final day, leaders are expected to make joint statements on issues like debt management and climate change. Malta has been chosen to host the next summit, in 2015, says the BBC's James Robbins, in Colombo. Mauritius,…

நல்லொரு வித்தியாசமான கட்டுரை. காட்டு தீயை பொருளாதார தேக்கத்துடன் தொடர்புபடுத்தி எழுதப்பட்டு இருக்கிது. Surviving a Recession — And a Wildfire Forests have experienced fires for millions of years; yet for at least the last hundred years, fire departments in wooded areas have suppressed fires as quickly as possible. With ever-increasing efficiency they've succeeded in removing fire from its traditional role in a natural forest eco-system. We now understand that the result has been catastrophic for the forests and for the people who live in and around them. Fires play an essential role in burning away the old understory and regenerating the forest. If dead branche…

While the accusation that Dr. Susan Rice, the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, intentionally mislead the public by saying that the Bengazhi killings of four Americans was a spontaneous attack in response to a film mocking prophet Mohammed, appears to have damaged her chances of being appointed as the U.S.'s Secretary of State after Hilary Clinton, Rice's human rights record in the U.N., including her inaction on Sri Lanka killings, has also come under closer scrutiny, Washington Post said in an article this Friday, quoting comment from an official of the Human Rights Watch. "Rice speaks often about her commitment to human rights, a cause that allies say is centr…

CHENNAI: Nobody can deny the efforts British Prime Minister David Cameron has taken to put Sri Lanka on notice over genocide and war crimes, Union shipping minister GK Vasan said. The Congress minister from Tamil Nadu applauded Cameron's visit to Colombo for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meet (CHOGM) at a function in Chennai on Monday. On Thursday, Cameron, whose decision to attend the summit was criticised, has promised to highlight human rights abuses in the island nation. It was described as an "extraordinary visit" to the war-affected areas, which also made him the first world leader to travel to the Tamil-dominated northern regions of Sri Lanka after indepen…

Sri Lankan monk is condemned to death for murder A Buddhist monk in Sri Lanka has been sentenced to death - the first monk in 50 years to receive such a sentence in the country. Gomadiye Sarana, 37, was convicted for a murder committed before he was ordained into the clergy. His fate is unclear, however, as no death sentence has been carried out for more than three decades in Sri Lanka. Sarana and an accomplice were found guilty of murdering a man 12 years ago by a court in the south of the country. The crime appeared to be linked to a dispute over an affair the monk had with the murder victim's sister. http://www.bbc.co.uk...d-asia-17133192

Isis releases 11-point guide for journalists UPVOTE Isis, which calls itself Islamic State, has occupied the world’s attention since it took over large swathes or Syrian and Iraqi territory this year, eventually declaring a new caliphate. But precious little is known about the group, which has its own surprisingly slick PR machine, mainly because its record with journalists is tragically abysmal - militants sparking global revulsion by beheading US reporters James Foley and Stephen Sotloff, as well as killing many other local journalists. Somehow, some journalists continue to report from the region, defying the incredible risks to document the group’s ma…

An Analysis on the ‘UN Internal Review Panel’s findings during the final months of the war in Sri Lanka [size=5]The internal probe commissioned to examine the conduct of the United Nations during the final months of the war in Sri Lanka with a view to putting its house in order is to be commended for being forthright about UN’s own failures. However it’s findings must also be seen as a scathing indictment on the Rajapaksa Government’s conduct of the war; the revelations contained in it conclusively making the case for the genocidal state to be put in the dock, indicating that the time has come for its senior political and military leaders and President Mahinda Rajap…
