He is due to take the oath of office Monday where he will face a parliament led by rival and current Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, potentially setting off another constitutional standoff that may not be resolved until parliamentary elections due a…

President Zelenskiy slams NATO for rejecting no-fly zone over Ukraine NATO on Friday rejected Ukrainian calls to help it protect its skies from Russian missiles and warplanes, wary of being dragged into Moscow’s war on its neighbour, but Europe promised more sanctions to punish Russian President Vladimir Putin. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy strongly criticised the decision, saying the alliance had given Russia the green light to continue its bombing campaign. He had earlier appealed to NATO to set up a no-fly zone over Ukraine, which Russia invaded by land, sea and air on Feb. 24. …

Foreign Minister John Baird has called in Sri Lanka’s high commissioner to Canada to discuss Canada’s “deep concern” with the country, according to his spokesperson. The country is facing growing pressure from all major parties in Canadian Parliament to improve its human rights record. But Sri Lankan High Commissioner Chitranganee Wagiswara argues that after an almost 30-year civil war, significant social change in the country is not a sprint—it’s a marathon. The parties are urging Sri Lanka to boost reconciliation between groups involved in the war. If the situation doesn’t improve, the parties have suggested Canada minimize (or fully stop) its participation in a h…

Patrick Brown , Patrick Brown (Mayor of Brampton City) UN estimates that up to 75,000 Tamil civilians were murdered during the Tamil Genocide. The destruction of the Mullivaikkal Memorial was an attempt by the Sri Lankan state to continue a cultural genocide, pretend the victims didn’t exist and rewrite history. Year 2019 is of great significance as it marks ten years since the defeat of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) by the Sri Lankan military forces. People looked forward to enjoying peace after years of conflict and there seemed to be more freedom, economic development and material prosperity in many parts of the country. There were changes within the society where people visibly relaxed with lax security concerns. It seemed as if there were no major threats to national security until the Easter Sunday carnage this April. While military victory was crucial in ensuring the defeat of the LTTE, it is vital to scrutinise whether peace and positive socio-economic…

On this day 11 years ago, thousands of Tamil protestors took to the streets of Toronto, demanding international action as the Sri Lankan military massacred tens of thousands of Tamils. As we mark the anniversary of the protest on the Gardiner Expressway, we share reflections from activists who were part of the demonstrations in Canada. 11 years have gone by since the Tamil diaspora community mobilized and took our voices to the streets. We raised our voices in an effort to raise awareness on the genocide of Tamils in Sri Lanka. I was 15 at the time, but I remember that day so clearly. It was Mother’s Day, and I was sitting with my family at my grandmother’…

CIA Agent Who Grilled Saddam Hussein Claims ISIS Wouldn’t Be Around If The Dictator Was Still Alive Mischa Pearlman in NEWS It was 11 years ago today that Saddam Hussein was executed after the Iraqi Special Tribunal had convicted him of crimes against humanity - specifically for the murder of 148 Iraq Shi'ites in the town of Dujail in 1982, which was retribution after an assassination attempt against him. Now, thanks to the Chilcot report, we all know that Tony Blair lied about there being weapons of mass destruction. Many would also argue that George W Bush used 9/11 to further propel the country's military-industrial complex by wa…
