Bearing Witness to the challenges of Post-Conflict Peace.

Panel Discussion.

In May of 2009 the almost 26 year long Sri Lankan Civil War came to a bloody end when government forces routed the Tamil Tigers in the country's North and East. In the process civilian safe zones were indiscriminately shelled, with more than 20,000 non combatants losing their lives. Since then repressive security measures continue and serious human rights abuses persist. Sri Lanka's prime minister maintains that there were 'zero casualties.'

While the recent US-led UN resolution calling on Sri Lanka to investigate crimes against humanity is an important first step, much remains to be done. Individuals need to be held accountable for their crimes before Sri Lanka can look to the future and hope for reconciliation.

This event will be both engaging and informative. Hopefully you will leave enriched but wanting more. Wanting answers.

How can the peoples of Sri Lanka move forward or even look towards a peaceful future? Where does Sri Lankan identity fit in the puzzle? What are the challenges of post-war Sri Lanka? How can Australia and the international community help? What about cricket?

Panelists include:

- Dr. Sam Pari, Australian Tamil Congress.

- Niru Palanivel, Student Activist.

- Chair: The Hon. David Shoebridge MLC, NSW Greens.

More TBA.

All are welcome. Please bring your friends!
