You must be squidding! Fisherman wins national competition... with a tiny catch ONE CENTIMETRE long

Davide Thambithurai, who won last year with a 61cm specimen, retained the All England Squid Championships with the only catch of the day

THEY all dreamt of landing the Big One and claiming first place in the All England Squid Championships.

But after enduring five hours of howling winds, a hardy band of fishermen – who had travelled hundreds of miles and shelled out a fortune on hotels – lost out to a baby squid barely 1cm long.

Davide Thambithurai, 28, who also won last year with a 61cm specimen, spotted the only catch of the day as he was about to cast.

The aquatic ecologist from Portsmouth, Hants, said: “You feel the squid on the end of your line if they are a good size but this just felt like a bit of debris.”

“I feel humbled and honoured to have retained this prize – and very fortunate.”

His competitors at Brighton took defeat in good heart and nicknamed the 1cm squid – only the body is measured – Kraken after the mythical sea giant.

Organiser George Cunningham said the bigger squids proved elusive because they couldn’t see the bait in the murky waters.
