இலங்கைப் புகலிடக் கோரிக்கையாளர் அவுஸ்திரேலியாவில் தற்கொலை

இலங்கைப் புகலிடக் கோரிக்கையாளர் ஒருவர் அவுஸ்திரேலியாவில் தற்கொலை செய்து கொண்டுள்ளார். பேர்த் புகலிடக் கோரிக்கையாளர் முகாமில் தங்கியிருந்த இலங்கையர் ஒருவரே இவ்வாறு உயிரை மாய்த்துக்கொண்டுள்ளார்.

 

குடும்பஸ்த்தரான தமிழர் ஒருவரே இவ்வாறு தற்கொலை செய்து கொண்டுள்ளார். உயிரிழந்தவரின் புகலிடக் கோரிக்கை ஏற்றுக் கொள்ளப்பட்டதா அல்லது மறுக்கப்பட்டதா என்பது பற்றிய தகவல்களை அவுஸ்திரேலிய குடிவரவு குடியகழ்வுத் திணைக்களம் வழங்கவில்லை.

 

நெஹ்ரூ மற்றம் மனுஸ் தீவுகளில் புகலிட முகாம்கள் அமைக்கப்படுவதற்கு முன்னதாக குறித்த நபர் அவுஸ்திரேலியாவிற்குள் பிரவேசித்திருக்கக் கூடுமென தெரிவிக்கப்படுகிறது. சம்பவத்தில் உயிரிழந்தவரின் குடும்ப உறுப்பினர்கள் மற்றும் நண்பர்களுக்கு ஆழ்ந்த இரங்கலைத் தெரிவித்துக் கொள்வதாக அவுஸ்திரேலிய குடிவரவு குடியகழ்வுத் திணைக்களம் அறிவித்துள்ளது.

 

நாடு கடத்தப்படக் கூடுமென்ற அச்சத்தினால் குறித்த புகலிடக் கோரிக்கையாளர் உயிரை மாய்த்துக்கொண்டதாக மனித உரிமை அமைப்புக்கள் குற்றம் சுமத்தியுள்ளன. புகலிடக் கோரிக்கையாளர்களுக்கு குடிவரவு குடியகழ்வுத் திணைக்களம் எந்தவிதமான உதவிகளையும் வழங்குவதில்லை என குற்றம் சுமத்தப்பட்டுள்ளது.

^{A TAMIL asylum-seeker suffering mental health problems and living in Perth on a bridging visa has taken his life on the third attempt.}

 

^{The 31-year-old man, whose name has not been released, was married and was the father of a four-year-old girl.}

^{His wife and daughter are still living in his fishing village of Udappuwa, 105km north of the Sri Lankan capital Colombo.}

^{Members of the Tamil community yesterday spoke to the man's wife, who gave permission for them to make arrangements to cremate his body in Perth.}

^{The Department of Immigration and Citizenship confirmed a man "who was lawfully in the community on a visa died in hospital yesterday (Saturday). He was admitted following an act of self harm."}

^{The department extended its sympathy to the man's family and friends.}

^{He passed away in Fremantle Hospital on Saturday after attempting suicide last Wednesday.}

 

Rama Somasunderam, a volunteer social worker with the Sri Lankan Tamil Association, claimed the man had been tortured by the SrI Lankan military before fleeing for Australia.

He said the man had been detained first on Christmas Island, where his mental condition deteriorated, and then in Brisbane, where he first attempted suicide.

The man was released into the community in Perth a month ago and had been living in the southern suburb of Hamilton Hill.

"They thought if he was released into the community he would fare better because he had a brother here," Mr Somasunderam said.

But he again unsuccessfully attempted suicide and was taken to Armadale Hospital. After the third attempt, he was rushed to the emergency department at Fremantle Hospital but could not be saved.

Raj Rajeswaran, from the Australian Tamil Congress, said the man should have been watched more closely.

"It's truly tragic," he said. "It's a pity we were not aware of his presence in the community. None of us were able to help him before the event. There is a lack of information.

"A lot of people come over here and become free and they probably don't know who to contact and we don't know where they are."

Mr Rajeswaran said the man's body was due to be released tomorrow and his cousins were travelling to Perth from Britain.

The man's brother was too distraught to speak.

The Immigration Department has referred the matter to the state coroner.
