Govt. is either naive or foolish?

Featured Replies

Either we are too naïve or extremely foolish. While the forces against Sri Lanka had been getting ready to degrade Sri Lanka for months, a team leader to counter the allegations on behalf of the country was appointed just 72 hours before the United Nations Human Rights Council sessions in Geneva, Switzerland.

It has been reported in the media that the decision to appoint President Rajapaksa’s Human Rights envoy Mahinda Samarasinghe to present Sri Lanka’s case in Geneva was a sudden decision. Samarasinghe who had been in the forefront in the previous Human Rights Council sessions was kept in the dark this time about the preparations for Council sessions—if there’s any— reportedly as  a result of a rift between him and External Affairs Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris.

It was reported that although President Rajapaksa under the advice of Prof. Peiris was planning to send a team comprising External Affairs Ministry officials to Geneva, he had got cold feet just a few days before the Council sessions and had decided to send Samarasinghe who hadn’t been briefed at all.

While this was how Sri Lanka was preparing  (or not preparing) to counter the allegations that will be mounted in Geneva, the forces against Sri Lanka had been making statements, issuing reports, recording documentaries and selecting people to present their case in Geneva months before the Council sessions.
Where is the so called patriotism? Where is the patriotism that was stirred up to stand against Halal to protect the Sinhala Buddhist country? Aren’t these the real issues that people should worry about and go into streets and protest?

According to experts, given the large number of allegations against the human rights violations against the country—true or false— Sri Lanka will be in UNHRC’s agenda for years. If this is the way the authorities handle the situation, there isn’t much hope for the country in the future.

Some politicians and even a section of the media have been trying to portray a picture that there will not be repercussions despite a passing of a resolution against Sri Lanka. The question that arises is, are they trying to hoodwink people by saying so or do they really have no idea about what is really happening. By looking at how affairs are conducted before the UNHRC sessions, we feel that it’s a mix.

Whatever it is, we as a nation sincerely wish those who participate in the UNHRC sessions on behalf of Sri Lanka will have all the courage and intelligence required to face the hypocritical attempts by Western nations to destabilise the country by pursuing their political and economic agendas.  But we also want to urge the authorities it’s time to get their act together and act as real patriots to protect the mother Sri Lanka.
