Neethan Shan named NDP’s provincial candidate in Scarborough-Rouge River

Scarborough Mirror

Ontario New Democrat Neethan Shan has been chosen to run for the party in Scarborough-Rouge River, setting up what could be a three-way election battle in the riding.

Well known in the Tamil-Canadian community, Shan, who is also the ONDP’s president, was nominated Sunday at the Chinese Cultural Centre of Greater Toronto.

The choice pits Shan for the second time against the riding’s veteran Liberal MPP Bas Balkissoon.

An ONDP release on Monday, Dec. 16, noted Shan “came within only about six per cent of unseating the incumbent” in 2011. In that contest, Balkissoon captured 42 per cent of votes and fought off both Shan, who received 36 per cent and a Progressive Conservative candidate, Ken Kim, who took 19.

This time, the PCs have nominated Raymond Cho, a longtime Scarborough councillor for the area, as their candidate for an election should the Liberal minority government fall or choose to go to the polls.

Shan has a higher profile than other Ontario NDP candidates in Scarborough, where Liberals have held all the provincial seats for a decade.

A former youth worker and York Region public school trustee, he has also run, unsuccessfully, for a provincial seat in Scarborough-Guildwood and against Cho in 2010 for the councillor’s chair in the city’s Ward 42.

Shan is the former executive director of the Canadian Tamil Youth Development agency, and current executive director of Toronto’s Council of Agencies Serving South Asians.

He said ONDP nominations are planned soon in the five remaining Scarborough ridings.
