Official guide to media training for Tamil journalists in Sri Lanka

1 August 2014

Can civil society conduct media training workshops for Tamil journalists?

No, it’s suspect and leads to some citizens exercising their democratic right to protest.

Why is the Government opposed to media training workshops for Tamil journalists?

Because training focussed on Tamil journalists is inherently suspect.

Can Tamil journalists travel for training?

No, because they are usually suspected drug addicts.

Can journalists work freely in Jaffna?

Completely, so long as they follow the Army’s understanding of media freedom.

Can Tamil journalists live and work without fear in post-war Sri Lanka?

Absolutely, as long as they engage in farming.

Have there been any attacks of Tamil journalists in the North post-war?

Negative, all reported incidents are the result of self-flagellation or attention-seeking tactics to compensate for declining readership.

Can a Tamil journalist speak freely with her/his sources?

Absolutely, as long as they are disclosed to Terrorism Investigation Department officials.

Can a Tamil journalist write without fear of arbitrary arrest and sentencing to rigorous imprisonment?

Most certainly, so long as they stay away from topics that don’t concern or should not be addressed by Tamils.

Do media establishments in the North operate in an environment free of fear?

Certainly, and the Army is there to enforce this.

In general, can civil society peacefully protest around that which concerns them?

With total freedom, so long as there are no road repairs that impede movement or fears the protests can cause problems.

Are there Tamil journalists in Sri Lanka?

Not really, most of them are in fact LTTE.
