மகிந்தபுர மற்றும் கல்லாறு சிறிலங்கா படை முகாம்களிலிருந்து படையினர் நேற்று வெள்ளிக்கிழமை இரவு முதல் வாகரைப் பகுதியை நோக்கி தொடர்ச்சியாக எறிகணைத் தாக்குதல்களை மேற்கொண்டு வருகின்றனர்.

அண்மைக்கால சம்பவங்களினால் இடம்பெயர்ந்து பம்மிவெட்டுவான் பாடசாலையில் தஞ்சமைடந்திருந்த பொதுமக்கள் மீது இன்று பிற்பகல் 1.40 மணியளவில் படையினர் மேற்கொண்ட கண்மூடித்தனமான எறிகணைத் தாக்குதலில் 4 பொதுமக்கள் கொல்லப்பட்டுள்ளதுடன் 10-க்கும் மேற்பட்டோர் காயமடைந்துள்ளனர்.

இதேவேளை, பற்சேனைப் பகுதியில் அகதிகள் முகாமாக மாற்றப்பட்டு பாடசாலை வளாகத்தினுள் படையினர் இன்று முற்பகல் 11.30 மணியளவில் ஏவிய எறிகணைகள் வீழ்ந்து வெடித்ததில் அங்கு தங்கியிருந்த 10-க்கும் மேற்பட்ட பொதுமக்கள் காயமடைந்தனர்.

இது இவ்வாறிருக்க, நேற்றிரவு வாகரை வெருகல் பகுதியை நோக்கி படையினர் மேற்கொண்ட பிறிதொரு எறிகணைத் தாக்குதல் சம்பவத்தில் 3 பொதுமக்கள் காயமடைந்துள்ளனர்.

திருகோணலை மகிந்தபுரம், கல்லாறு ஆகிய இராணுவ முகாம்களில் இருந்து நேற்றிரவு முதல் தொடர்ச்சியான எறிகணை வீச்சுத் தாக்குதல்கள் நடைபெற்றவண்ணமுள்ளது. இன்று காலை 11.30 மணியளவில் பால்ச்சேனை பாடசாலையில் தஞ்சமடைந்திருந்த அகதிகள் மீது எறிகணைகள் வீழ்ந்து வெடித்ததால் பாடசாலை சேதமடைந்ததுடன் 10 தமிழ் மக்கள் படுகாயமடைந்துள்ளனர்.

இத்துடன் வெருகல் பகுதியில் மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்ட எறிகணை வீச்சினால் 3 தமிழ் மக்கள் படுகாயமடைந்துள்ளனர். கடந்த நவம்பர் 8ம் திகதி இதே பகுதியில் உள்ள மற்றுமொரு பாடசாலை (கதிரவெளி விக்கினேஸ்வரா வித்தியாலையம்) மீது படையினர் நடத்திய எறிகணை வீச்சில் 47 தமிழ் மக்கள் படுகொலை செய்யப்பட்டும் 125 பேர் படுகாயமடைந்தமையும் குறிப்பிடத்தக்கது.

Artillery duels in Sri Lanka as Norway bid fails.

Troops and Tamil Tiger rebels traded long-range artillery and mortar bombs in north-eastern Sri Lanka, a day after a fresh Norwegian peace attempt failed, officials said.

The two sides were exchanging long-range attacks in the district of Trincomalee where four soldiers and several civilians were wounded on Saturday, local officials said.

The renewed attacks came as peacebroker Norway failed on Friday to secure an agreement to end a blockade on the Jaffna peninsula where nearly half a million people are trapped by fighting.

The rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) said they told Oslo's envoy Jon Hanssen-Bauer to persuade the government to open the land access to the embattled north without conditions.

The government had asked Hanssen-Bauer to secure a deal with the Tigers to allow a convoy of some 400 trucks to travel through rebel-held territory, but the Tigers rejected a one-off convoy.

Instead, the LTTE political wing leader S. P. Thamilselvan told Hanssen-Bauer the government must open a disputed highway to Jaffna, as well as another highway to the island's east.

SLA fired artillery shells hit school, 13 refugees wounded

Thirteen refugees, including a 4-year-old child, were wounded when Sri Lanka Army fired artillery shells hit a school in Paalchenai, 8 km north of Vaharai Saturday, around 11:20 a.m., as SLA intensified a ground offensive from Eachilampattu, via A15 trunk road towards Verugal, 15 km northwest of Vakarai amid indiscriminate artillery barrage. Nine wounded refugees from the school where IDP families were staying, were rushed to Vaharai hospital, medical sources said. Heavy fighting was reported between Liberation Tigers and the Sri Lanka Army at Eachilamapattu.

Tens of thousands of Tamil civilians were displaced from Trincomalee district to Vaharai when Sri Lanka Army launched a major offensive on Sampoor.

The offensive on Sampoor, justified by Colombo, as necessary to safeguard the Trincomalee naval base from LTTE artillery fire, continued on Vaharai after the capture of Sampoor on September 04, despite LTTE assurances to Norwegian facilitators of not initiating new offensives.

The biggest military offensive by the SLA after the Ceasefire Agreement in 2002, imposing an econoimic blockade on 40 000 civllians in the region and denying access to NGOs and closing down the gateways, has continued for more than two months.

Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission has been denied access to the area by Colombo.

Limited food supplies were allowed into the region, after International humanitarian pressure on Colombo.

The Sri Lankan military, by engaging in a major military offensive in Trincomalee and Batticaloa, aiming to isloate the LTTE forces in the east from Vanni, has nullified chances for renewed hopes of ceasefire amid the Norwegian facilitators efforts to implement the CFA in bringing parties to talks in Geneva in February and October this year.

Thousands flee Eachilampattu, Palchenai.

Hundreds of Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim families started fleeing villages surrounding Eachilampattu border area into SLA and LTTE controlled territory as thousands of refugees from Palchenai and Verugal areas north of Batticaloa district started fleeing towards Vaharai, where Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) Kfir bombers engaged in aerial bombardment in an attempt to block civilians from reaching Vaharai.

Sri Lanka Army had asked the Police in Kantalai to send busses to border area to transport IDPs from border villages south of Trincomalee district towards Kantalai.

Indiscriminate artillery barrage from Sri Lanka Army from Kallar SLA camp and Punanai camp, continued towards Palchenai and Verugal areas north of Batticaloa district, refugees reaching Vaharai said.

வாகரை மருத்துவமனையில் இதுவரை 9 சடலங்கள் ஒப்படைக்கப்பட்டதோடு 25 பொதுமக்கள் சிகிற்சைக்காக அனுமதிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளதாக வாகரை மருத்துமனை வட்டாரங்கள் தெரிவித்துள்ளனன.

WE were reminded of the LTTE's brazen persistence with its inhuman 'human shields' strategy when the Tigers' heavy artillery fire on Somadevi Vidyalaya in Kallaru in Trincomalee recently claimed the lives of three civilians while injuring 11 schoolchildren and a teacher.

While reminding us of the callous and cold inhumanity the LTTE is capable of the tragedy also reflects the Tigers' well-known penchant for ethnic cleansing.

The coldly cruel tactic is aimed at provoking the Security Forces into firing on civilians and we commend the Armed Forces for their remarkable restraint in the face of such provocation which is finally aimed at tainting the State.

While the Security Forces would not be led into any kind of impulsive, irrational actions by these sinister Tiger designs, it needs to be also recognised that the Security Forces are obliged to defend the national interest.

For, the national interest cannot be compromised and the Armed Forces are compelled to take on the Tigers when the latter pose a threat to the country's best interests.

Besides the aforementioned issues, the Trincomalee incident underlines the Tigers' brutal nature. Civilians, including schoolchildren, would be brought into their line of fire and killed, if such brutal behaviour would further LTTE interests.

Thus, it should be clear to the world that it is the LTTE and no one else who is obdurately and recalcitrantly standing in the way of negotiating an end to our conflict.

The world community should be convinced of the difficulties the State faces in getting a terror group to the negotiating table, whose avowed aim is to kill and spill innocent blood.

The international community should also see in this episode, the Tigers' monstrous capacity to spill the blood of children. Here is concluding proof that the brutal victimisation of children is an LTTE speciality.

However, to date it is only the US which has forthrightly condemned the LTTE for these inhumane acts. The US has consistently condemned the Tigers for these atrocities and thereby showed itself to be unequivocally on the side of law and order.

Hopefully, more and more states of the world community would join the US in condemning the LTTE. This would help in convincing the LTTE that its acts of terror would be condoned by no sensible section. In turn, such worldwide opposition may compel the Tigers into cooperating in working out a solution.

If not, the world has no choice but to send the Tigers into the political wilderness. That is, the LTTE would need to be completely internationally isolated and hunted down in earnest.

The international community would have to adopt this option if the Tigers continue to be recalcitrant and mindlessly opposed to cooperating in working out a settlement.

Meanwhile, we hope that our missions around the world are doing the needful in exposing the brutality of the LTTE to the international community.

It is to the extent to which this is done forcefully that there would be collective, global action against the LTTE. The world needs to see and be told of the Tigers' insane sadism against the people of Sri Lanka.

World opinion would not swing completely against the Tigers until this is done.

We need hardly say that the LTTE is engaged also in a bitter propaganda war against the State. The Tigers need to be effectively defeated on this plane too. How better could this be done than through a forthright exposure of Tiger brutality?
