S. Raveenthranath, the Vice Chancellor of the Eastern University of Sri Lanka (EUSL), who was forced to resign his post recently following threats from paramilitary Karuna Group that abducted a Deen of the EUSL demanding the resignation of the Vice Chancellor, was reported missing since 01:15 p.m. Friday, Dehiwale Police in Colombo said. The VC was reported missing in High Security area in the Bauddhaloka mawatta.

Mr. Raveendranath, who was working at University Grants Commission (UGC) where he had submitted his resignation, was on his way to attend a meeting at Vidya Mawatta near Bauddhaloka mawatta when he was last seen by his driver at 12:30 a.m.

The driver of Raveendranath's vehicle was instructed by the VC to come back at 02:00 p.m. when the meeting is over.

The driver contacted the family as he could not get in touch with Mr. Raveendranath.

A complaint was registered at the Police around 9:30 p.m. Friday.

Raveendranath, 55, and father of two girls, was living in Colombo as his resignation was not accepted by the UGC.

Raveendranath began his carrer in 1978 in Karadiyanarau and he was a founder-member of the institute.

Unidentified gunmen, widely believed to be from Karuna group, came in a white van, kidnapped the Dean of Arts faculty, on 30th September, Saturday night, while he was at his Uppodai home in Batticaloa.

The kidnappers demanded the immediate resignation of the Vice Chancellor of EUSL, Dr. S. Ravindranath, for his release.

Even though Dr Ravindranath submitted his resignation the following day, 1st October, to the University Grants Commission (UGC) Bala Sugumar was not released until Tuesday.

நேற்று கொழும்பில் ஒரு கூட்டத்துக்குச் சென்ற அவர் அதன் பின்னர் காணாமல் போயுள்ளதாக அவரது மருமகனான டாக்டர் மலரவன் என்பவர் முறைப்பாடு செய்துள்ளார்.

மட்டக்களப்பில் பல்கலைக்கழகத்தில் ஏற்பட்ட சில பிரச்சினைகள் காரணமாக அண்மைக்காலமாக அவர் கொழும்பில் இருந்து பணியாற்றி வந்ததாகக் கூறும் மலரவன் , அவரை எவரும் கடத்தியிருக்கலாம் என்று சந்தேகம் வெளியிட்டிருப்பதுடன் , அப்படியிருப்பின் அவரைக் கடத்தியவர்கள் அவரை விடுவிக்க வேண்டும் என்று வேண்டுகோளும் விடுத்துள்ளார்.

அவர் விடுவிக்கப்படும் பட்சத்தில் இரவீந்திரநாத் அவர்கள் தனது துணைவேந்தர் பதவியை துறப்பார் என்றும் குடும்பத்தினர் சார்பில் மலரவன் கூறியுள்ளார்.

Another horrible action by Karuna group. Even intellectual people who does'nt belong to any political party are not safe in SriLanka. Can Sri Lankan Government stop Karuna group from this sort of activities?. If Government can fund them , they are partialy blamed for this abduction. Professor Raveendranath is an innocent and humble man who was one of the founders of Eastern University.So many students fondly like him for his humbleness and his hardwork.

பெளத்தலோக மாவத்தையின் உயர் பாதுகாப்பு வலயத்தில் அவர் காணாமல் போயுள்ளார் என காவல்துறை தெரிவித்துள்ளது.

சிறிலங்கா இராணுவத்துடன் சேர்ந்தியங்கும் துணை இராணுவக் குழுவான கருணா குழுவினரது தொடர்ச்சியான மிரட்டலினால், எஸ்.ரவீந்திரநாத் பதவி விலகக் கட்டாயப்படுத்தப்பட்டார்.

பல்கலைக்கழக மானிய ஆணையத்தில் பணிபுரியும் ரவீந்தரநாத், அங்கு தமது பதவி விலகல் கடிதத்தைக் கொடுத்து விட்டு வித்தியா மாவத்தையில் ஒரு கூட்டத்துக்குச் சென்றபோது காணாது போயுள்ளார். அங்குதான் பகல் 12.30 மணிக்கு அவரது ஓட்டுநர் அவரைக் கடைசியாகப் பார்த்துள்ளார்.

கூட்டம் முடிந்ததும் தம்மை அழைத்துச் செல்ல பிற்பகல் 2.00 மணிக்கு வருமாறு ஓட்டுநரிடம் ரவீந்திரநாத் கூறியுள்ளார். ரவீந்திரநாத்துடன் தொடர்பு கொள்ள முடியாத அவரது ஓட்டுநர், அவரின் குடும்பத்தினரைத் தொடர்பு கொண்டார்.

பின்னர் இரவு 9.30 மணியளவில் காவல்துறைக்கு முறைப்பாடு கொடுக்கப்பட்டது. அவரது பதவி விலகல் கடிதம் ஏற்றுக்கொள்ளப்படாத காரணத்தால், கொழும்பிலேயே வசித்து வந்த 55 வயதான ரவீந்திரநாத்துக்கு இரண்டு மகள்கள் உள்ளனர்.

முன்னதாக செப்ரெம்பர் 30 ஆம் நாள் வெள்ளை வானில் வந்த கருணா குழு என நம்பப்படும் அடையாளம் தெரியாத ஆயுததாரிகள் கிழக்குப் பல்கலைக்கழக கலைத்துறைப் பீடாதிபதி பால சுகுமாரைக் கடத்திச் சென்றனர். அவரை விடுவிப்பதற்கு முன்பாக துணைவேந்தர் உடனடியாக பதவி விலக வேண்டும் என்றும் அவர்கள் நிபந்தனை விதித்தனர்.

கொழும்பு பௌத்தாலோக மாவத்தையிலுள்ள பண்டாரநாயக்கா சர்வதேச ஞாபகார்த்த மாநாட்டு மண்டபத்தில் விஞ்ஞான ஆய்வுக் கூட்டமொன்றுக்கு வெள்ளிக் கிழமை காலை 8 மணியளவில் சென்ற இவர், பிற்பகல் 1.30 மணியளவில் கூட்டம் முடிவடைந்த பின்னர் காணாமல் போயுள்ளார்.

பிற்பகல் 1.30 மணியளவில் மண்டபத்திற்கு வெளியே வந்த இவரை அங்கு வந்தவர்கள் கடத்திச் சென்றிருக்கலாமெனக் கருதப்படுகிறது.

மேற்படி ஆய்வுக் கூட்டத்திற்குச் சென்ற கலாநிதி ரவீந்திரநாத், காலை 8 மணியளவில் தனது வாகனத்திலிருந்து இறங்கிய பின், பிற்பகல் 1.30 மணியளவில் அங்கு வருமாறு சாரதிக்கு கூறியுள்ளார்.

இதன்படி, பிற்பகல் 1.30 மணியளவில் பண்டாரநாயக்கா ஞாபகார்த்த மாநாட்டு மண்டபத்திற்கு காருடன் சென்ற வாகனச் சாரதி இவரை நீண்ட நேரம் தேடிய பின் அவருடன் கையடக்க தொலைபேசி மூலம் தொடர்பு கொள்ள முயன்றும் அது முடியாது போயுள்ளது.

அவர் எங்கிருக்கின்றார் என்பதை கண்டுபிடிப்பதற்கான நடவடிக்கைகளை எடுக்குமாறு ஜனாதிபதி மகிந்த ராஜபக்ஷவை கேட்டுள்ளது.

ஜனாதிபதிக்கு எழுதியுள்ள கடிதத்திலேயே இது குறித்து தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. அதில் மேலும் குறிப்பிடப்பட்டுள்ளதாவது;

கிழக்குப் பல்கலைக்கழகம் இலங்கையிலுள்ள எமது கல்வி கூட்டமைப்புகளில் ஒன்று.

மிகவும் கடினமான சூழ்நிலையில் அதனை கட்டியெழுப்புவதற்கு மேற்கொள்ளப்பட்ட முயற்சிகள் குறித்து நாங்கள் அறிவோம்.

மேலும்இ சமீபத்தில் சமாதானத்தைக் கட்டியெழுப்புதல் மற்றும் அபிவிருத்தி தொடர்பான பட்ட மேற்படிப்பு கற்கை நெறியை ஆரம்பிப்பதற்கான நடவடிக்கைகளை அவர் மேற்கொண்டிருந்தார்.

இவ்வருட ஆரம்பத்தில் எமது பீடம் ஏற்பாடு செய்திருந்த செயலமர்வில் அவர் கலந்து கொண்டிருந்தார்.

வெள்ளிக்கிழமையிலிருந்து அவர் காணாமல்போயுள்ளார் என்ற செய்தி குறிப்பாக அவர் தனது உத்தியோகபூர்வ பணிகளில் ஈடுபட்டிருந்த வேளை என்ற செய்தி எமக்கு அவரது பாதுகாப்பு குறித்த கவலையை ஏற்படுத்தியுள்ளது.

Students and academic staff of the Eastern University in Vantharumoolai, 17km north of Batticaloa, have shut down the University in protest against the reported forced disappearance of their Vice Chancellor in High Security area in Colombo, Friday. Vice Chancellor Professor S. Raveendranath, a founder member of the EUSL, was forced to submit resignation of his post in October to the University Grant Commission (UGC), to secure the release the Dean of the Arts Faculty, Bala Sugumar, who was abducted by the paramilitary demanding the resignation of the Vice Chancellor. The resignation, pending approval by the UGC, had forced the VC to function from Colombo till he was reported disappeared.

Professor Gamini Samaranayake, the chairman of the UGC has called for a meeting in Colombo Monday where the Vice Chancellors of the Universities in Sri Lanka discussed the issue, informed academic circles in Colombo said.

At Vantharumoolai, the student's hostel stood vacated as most students fled the University premises Monday.

"Academic freedom and intellectual diversity are totally suppressed in Batticaloa," an academic at the University told the TamilNet reporter who visited the University premises Monday afternoon.

"Professor Raveendranath is a genuine educationalist. He has no political association with anyone," the academic who did not wish to be named told TamilNet.

Raveendranath, 55, father of two, who has been associated with the EUSL since it's establishment, has been actively initiating collaborative programmes with external Universities.

The paramilitary Karuna group, widely alleged to be operated by the Sri Lanka Army has imposed a press censorship in SLA controlled Batticaloa by not allowing the papers printed in Colombo.

Except Thinakaran, the Government owned paper, Thinamurasu, the paper by owned by the EPDP, another paramilitary in public political alliance with Rajapakse government and Karuna Group's "Thamil Alai" paper were seen in Batticaloa town. The paramilitary run papers were distributed by paramilitary cadres who operate jointly with the Sri Lanka Army.

67 academics, colleagues, and partners of Eastern University, across country borders, Tuesday jointly urged for the safe release of Professor S. Raveendranath, the Vice Chancellor of the Eastern University, who was reported missing Friday in Colombo's High Security area. In September, an unidentified armed group kidnapped the Dean of the Faculty of Arts at Eastern University, demanding Professor Ravindranath's resignation in return for the Dean's release.

The joint appeal said: "Professor Ravindranath has played a central part in the work of the University from its foundation in 1981, and his tenure as Vice-Chancellor has coincided with major developments like the opening of the first medical school in the East of Sri Lanka."

Statement of Concern Regarding Missing Vice-Chancellor of Eastern University, Sri Lanka

We wish to express our deep concern about the apparent abduction of Professor S. Ravindranath, Vice-Chancellor of Eastern University in Sri Lanka. On Friday 15th December, he left a meeting of the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science in central Colombo, and has not been seen since. His family have reported his disappearance to the police.

In September an unidentified armed group kidnapped the Dean of the Faculty of Arts at Eastern University, demanding Professor Ravindranath's resignation in return for the Dean's release. The Vice-Chancellor has not been able to return to the University since that incident and had been carrying out his duties from Colombo.

Our colleagues in universities across Sri Lanka have struggled heroically in the face of war and natural disaster in recent years. Eastern University is located in one of the areas most devastated by the civil war and by the Tsunami of 2004.

That it is still capable of producing world-class researchers is testimony to the quality and dedication of its academic staff. Professor Ravindranath has played a central part in the work of the University from its foundation in 1981, and his tenure as Vice-Chancellor has coincided with major developments like the opening of the first medical school in the East of Sri Lanka.

As colleagues, friends, and, in some cases, academic partners of Eastern University we urgently appeal for the swift and safe release of Professor Ravindranath, and for the protection and safety of all our colleagues in Sri Lanka.

உபவேந்தர் ரவீந்திரநாத்தை கடத்தியது துணை இராணுவக் குழு

கிழக்குப் பல்கலைக்கழகத்தின் உபவேந்தர் ரவீந்திரநாத்தை கடத்தியது சிறிலங்கா இராணுவத்துடன் சேர்ந்தியங்கும் துணை இராணுவக் குழு என்று கூறப்படுகிறது.

உபவேந்தர் ரவீந்திரநாத் கடந்த வெள்ளிக்கிழமை கடத்தப்படுவதற்கு முன்பாக கிழக்குப் பல்கலைக் கழகத்தில் 8 கல்வியாளர்களுக்கும் "கடத்தப்படுவீர்கள் என்றும் யாழ்ப்பாணத்துக்கு சென்று விடுங்கள்" என்றும் எச்சரிக்கப்பட்டதாகக் கூறப்படுகிறது.

உபவேந்தர் ரவீந்திரநாத்தை விடுவிக்க வேண்டும் என்று 67 சர்வதேச கல்வியாளர்கள் அண்மையில் வேண்டுகோள் விடுத்திருந்தனர்.

கடத்தப்பட்ட கிழக்குப் பல்ககலைக்கழகத் துணைவேந்தரை உடனடியாக விடுவிக்குமாறும் அவரது உயிருக்கு ஏதாவது தீங்கை ஏற்படுத்தி கறைபடிந்த வரலாற்றை உருவாக்க வேண்டாம் என்றும் மன்றாட்டமாகக் கேட்டுக் கொள்கின்றோம்.

யாழ். பல்கலைக்கழக மாணவர் ஒன்றியம் வேண்கோள் விடுத்துள்ளது. இது தொடர்பாக அந்த ஒன்றியம் விடுத்துள்ள அறிக்கையில் தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளதாவது:

கடத்தப்பட்ட கிழக்குப்பல்கலைக்கழகத் துணைவேந்தர் தொடர்பாகவோ அல்லது அவரது கடத்தல் தொடர்பாகவோ இதுவரை எந்தவிதமான உருப்படியான, திருப்பதியான பதில்கள் கிடைக்கப்பெறாமை மிகவும் வருத்தத்திற்குரிய விடயமாகின்றது.

தற்போது பதவியில் உள்ள அரசு காலத்திலேயே வடக்குக் கிழக்கு சார் கல்விச் சமூகம் மீதான வன்முறைகள் அதிகரித்த நிலையில் காணப்படுகின்றது. கல்வியாளர்களுக்கான அச்சுறுத்தல்களும், கடத்தல்களும் நாட்டின் அபிவிருத்தி தகமை நிலையையே மேலும் பாதிப்படையச் செய்யும் என்பதோடு, தமிழ்க் கல்விமான்கள் மற்றும் மாணவர்கள் மீது பிரயோகிக்க முனையும் வன்முறைகள் அவர்கள் ஐக்கிய இலங்கை தீர்வுக்கான தமது சிந்தனைத் தளத்திலிருந்து மேன்மேலும் விலகவே வழி சமைக்கும்.

மூடப்பட்ட நிலையில் உள்ள எமது பல்கலைக்கழகக் கல்விச் செயற்பாடுகளை உடனடியாக மீள ஆரம்பிப்பதற்கான புறச்சூழ்நிலைகளளைத் தோற்றுவிப்பதோடு, கடத்தப்பட்ட கிழக்குப் பல்கலைக்கழக துணைவேந்தரையும் உடனடியாக விடுவிக்கும் படியும் அவரது உயிருக்கு ஏதாவது தீங்கை ஏற்படுத்தி கறை படிந்த வரலாற்றை உருவாக்க முயல வேண்டாம் எனவும் மன்றாட்டமாகக் கேட்டுக் கொள்கின்றோம் என அவ்வறிக்கையில் தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

துணைவேந்தர் எஸ்.ரவீந்திரநாத்தை விரைவாக கண்டுபிடிக்கவும்: அனைத்துலக மன்னிப்புச்சபை வேண்டுகோள்

சிறிலங்காவின் தலைநகர் கொழும்பில் காணாமல் போன கிழக்குப் பல்கலைக்கழக துணைவேந்தர் பேராசிரியர் எஸ்.ரவீந்திரநாத்தை கண்டுபிடிக்க உடன் நடவடிக்கை எடுக்குமாறு அனைத்துலக மன்னிப்புச்சபை அரசுக்கு வேண்டுகோள் விடுத்துள்ளது.

சிறிலங்கா அரச படையினருடன் சேர்ந்தியங்கும் துணை இராணுவக் குழுக்களின் கைவரிசை இக்கடத்தலில் இருப்பதாக தாம் சந்தேகிப்பதாகவும் மேலும் அந்த அறிக்கையில் தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

அனைத்துலக மன்னிப்புச் சபை வெளியிட்டுள்ள அறிகையில்,

பேராசிரியர் எஸ்.ரவீந்திரநாத் ஒரு இருதய நோயாளி எனவும் கடத்தல்காரர்களால் அவர் துன்புறுத்தப்பட்டால் அது அவரின் உயிருக்கு ஆபத்தாகலாம் என்றும் குறிப்பிட்டுள்ளது.

கடந்த 15 ஆம் நாள் கொழும்பில் விஞ்ஞான மாநாடு ஒன்றில் கலந்து கொண்ட துணைவேந்தர் கொழும்பின் பாதுகாப்பு மிகுந்த பகுதியில் கடத்திச் செல்லப்பட்டார். அவரை இறுதியாக தேநீர் இடைவேளையின் போது கண்டதாக அவரது நண்பர்கள் தெரிவித்தனர்.

எஸ்.ரவீந்திரநாத் கடத்தப்பட்ட பகுதியில் படையினரின் பிரசன்னம் மிக அதிகமாக இருப்பதால் கடத்தல்காரர்கள் அரச படையினரின் துணையுடன் கடத்தலில் ஈடுபட்டிருக்கலம் என சர்வதேச மன்னிப்புச்சபை சந்தேகம் வெளியிட்டுள்ளது.

சமீப காலமாக சிறிலங்காவின் வடக்கு மற்றும் கிழக்குப் பகுதிகளில் அதிகமான பொதுமக்கள் காணாமல் போவதாகவும் அல்லது படையினராலும் மற்றும் அவர்களுடன் சேர்ந்தியங்கும் துணை இராணுவக் குழுக்களினாலும் கடத்தப்படுவதாகவும் அனைத்துலக மன்னிப்புச்சபை மேலும் தெரிவித்துள்ளது.

விசாரணைக்கு என அழைத்துச் செல்லப்படும் மக்களே இவ்வாறு காணாமல் போவதாக அந்த அறிக்கையில் மேலும் குறிப்பிடப்பட்டுள்ளது.
