A father faces three charges of attempted murder today after three youths, who were struck by a car that jumped a curb and plowed through a fence outside a Toronto high school, were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Police and paramedics were called to Stephen Leacock Collegiate Institute (map) shortly after 1 p.m. today, where they found the three victims in two different locations in and around a park across the street from the school, near Birchmount Rd. and Bay Mills Blvd.

The trio, who were sitting in the grass at the time, was hit when a man drove a mini-van towards them. It then crashed into a tree and chain fence of a nearby townhouse, where it came to a halt.

A 43-year old Toronto man was arrested at the scene.

“This collision involved a family dispute between a father, a daughter and a boyfriend,” said Toronto police Sgt. James Cassells of the Traffic Services division, adding police believe the collision wasn’t “unintentional.”

“This was a direct result of a driver making a direct motion towards a group of people.”

In Ron Watson Park, shoes and clothing were strewn across the grass, marking the path left by the turquoise Toyota mini-van.

Cassells said it doesn’t look like the van was driven at an excessive speed — probably in the area of 25 to 30-kilometres an hour.

A 16-year-old girl, an 18-year-old man and a 21-year-old man were taken to hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries, police said.

Chuck Hay, superintendent of education for the Toronto District School Board, said two of the three people struck by the car were Leacock students — one male, one female.

He said the Leacock students were conscious when rushed to hospital.

He did not know the identity of the third victim.

Police haven’t released the suspect’s name. He is scheduled to appear in court on June 2.
