Messages from “Victorious Tamil” - 2007

Over 10000 Tamil Diaspora marched towards the UN office in Geneva on 11th June 2007. The marchers from all over Europe, North America and Australia held placards of Tamileelam National Leader, emblems of Tamileelam defense infrastructures like Navy, Airforce and the flag of Tamileelam. They started from Groppetee Park came through the city streets in procession and converged peacefully in the designated area facing the UN office. The event began with the hoisting of the Tamileelam flag. Several human rights activists, Tamileelam activists and well wishers of non-Tamil origin dominated the long list of speakers in the event. A mirror event was organised in Toronto Canada to show solidarity and unity with the thinking of those marching thousands of miles across the pond. The event was again attended in thousands and with a long list of non-Tamil speakers.

The significance of the main event's location and the date is to act as a vigil for the week long 5th session of the Human Rights Council taking place from 11 – 18th June 2007 in the Geneva UN premises. An international press conference was held ahead of the main event in The Club Suisse de la Presse - Geneva Press Club to explain the goals and scope of the event.

• To bring to the attention of the participants of the 5th session of the Human Rights Council, the gross human right violations, scant regards to the responsibilities/obligations of a recognized state and more disturbingly the genocidal intentions of a UN member state namely Sri Lanka.

• To urge solidarity from world community on the inalienable rights of Tamils as an ethnic group with their own language culture and heritage to rule themselves in their traditional homeland.

• To demonstrate the reaffirmation by public that the leadership of LTTE is the Tamil National Leadership and the associated politico military infrastructure is the only 1 capable of representing and defending Eelam Tamil’s interests and affairs.

Beyond these, there are few more messages to be read between the lines. The messages are subtle in nature but have much more significance than the obvious ones.

Upsurge in transnational support base

Banning of a national organization spearheading its liberation struggle and labeling her leadership as terrorists turned out to be highly provocative. The transnational support base for Tamileelam is showing signs of ever growing momentum and determination. Tamils begin to realize their inherent abilities and indigenous capacity to shape their own destiny. While they realize and muster their potential to defend their rightful existence, they take extreme care in managing the realized power as responsible citizens of the international community. Tamils united behind LTTE and her leadership reminds the section of the wishful thinking policy makers in India that their outdated school of thoughts needs serious reconsideration.

Tamils will reach the ultimate goal of independence at any cost, no amount of brutality, pressure tactics and intimidation going to deter them. These classic counter insurgency tactics whether applied crudely through the barrels of guns, barrages of multi barrel rockets & indiscriminate air raids in the Tamil homeland or in a rather sophisticated manner by banning Diaspora Tamil organizations & harassing the activists with arbitary arrests could at best only delay or affect the price Tamils have to pay but will not deter them from realizing their goal.

Recognition by the world community

A significant if not the majority of the international community recognize the legitimacy of Eelam Tamil’s struggle for independence. The signs of it are more visible than ever. However, there are convoluted bureaucratic and selfish reasons to not acknowledge the reality and the future for the island as of now. Members of the world community that may not have direct vested interests in the island are still unable to express their views due to their mutual understanding/agreements with others that have vested interest in the island. There are few members of the world community who are unable to break the ranks and protocols of the UN membership at least at this juncture. In the mean time those with vested interest would make most of the misguided Sri Lankan government’s hopeless resistance with ever more desperate measures.

The ominous signs are that the recognition for independent Tamil state would surface when the time is ripe for it. But Tamils have to remain united and committed during the harsher times ahead to complete the journey. The importance of Tamil Diaspora as pillars of international politico-diplomatic, economic, technical and industrial strength for the budding Tamil nation couldn’t be higher than any other time in the long history of the struggle. More specifically the intellectual participation and contributions in various disciplines of every able mind are the need of the hour to expedite the solution, minimise the losses and alleviate the suffering back home.

Emergence of a new Tamil – Sinhala solidarity

A new solidarity built on the mutual respect and acceptance of both nations’ respective sovereign right is emerging between Tamils and Sinhalese. Dr Brian Senaviratna is a beacon of such a healthy solidarity and better future of both countries. There are many more Sinhalese who understand and accept the reality of a 2 country solution but they remain silent. Their silent by standing cannot be a convenient position that could potentially prevent the break up of the island into 2. The desolate homelands with Tamils driven to destitute, over 100000 in death, upto 3 times of that suffering various degree of injuries to amputations and more than 10 times of that displaced (i.e 1 million plus) over the 30 years of struggle have left nothing much to lose in future. Tamils across the social structure realize the importance and urgency of a self rule more than ever thanks to the historic low on their state of infrastructure, economy and academic standards due to Sri Lankan state sponsored deprivation.

While the corrupt officials and politicians siphon off funds in millions of dollars, overwhelming defense expenditure of the Sri Lankan state is taking the Sinhalese inadvertently towards a similar destitute state slowly but surely. The mindless Sinhala extremists tout themselves as saviors of the sovereignty and integrity of Sri Lanka, while the incorrigible efforts to retain their unlawful grip on the Tamil homeland is paid with the sovereignty of the their own home land, i.e. the south of the island. A recent example is the Rajapakse government buckling in to sign the ACSA with USA. Such dangerous erosion of the sovereignty should be taken seriously by those who truly care about a Sinhala nation. A true Sinhala patriot is not the 1 who blindly advocates the occupation of Tamil homeland and oppression of the Tamils at any cost including the auctioning of Sinhala nation’s own sovereign rights in a piecemeal manner. More Sinhala moderates with long term vision and wisdom should come forward to strengthen the likes of Dr Brian Senaviratna.
