நியூசிலாந்து அருகே கடலில் மாபெரும் பூகம்பம்: கட்டடங்கள் சேதம்- சுனாமி பீதியில் தீவுகள்!

வெலிங்டன்: நியூசிலாந்து நாட்டின் வடக்கே உள்ள வனாது தீவுக்கு அருகே தென் பசிபிக் கடலில் மிகப் பெரிய பூகம்பம் ஏற்பட்டது, இதனால் நியூசிலாந்து உள்பட அப் பகுதியில் உள்ள பல தீவுகள் குலுங்கின. சுனாமி ஏற்படலாம் என்ற பீதியும் பரவியது.

நியூசிலாந்து நேரப்படி இன்று அதிகாலை 4.08 மணிக்கு இந்த பூகம்பம் ஏற்பட்டது. இது ரிக்டர் அளவுகோளில் 7.2 என்ற அளவுக்கு பதிவானது.

இதனால் நியூசிலாந்தின் பல பகுதிகள் அதிர்ந்தன. சாலைகளில் வெடிப்புகள் ஏற்பட்டன. கட்டடங்கள் குலுங்கியதால் மக்கள் அலறியடித்தபடி ஓடினர். மின் வினியோகமும் துண்டிக்கப்பட்டது.

சுனாமி ஏற்படலாம் என்ற அச்சம் நிலவியதால் கடலோரப் பகுதி மக்கள் அப்புறப்படுத்தப்பட்டனர். ஆனால், சுனாமி அலைகள் உருவாகவில்லை.

அதே போல வனாது உள்ளிட்ட பல தீவுக் கூட்டங்களிலும் நிலநடுக்கத்தால் பெரும் பொருட் சேதம் ஏற்பட்டுள்ளது. ஆனால், உயிர்ச் சேதம் குறித்து தகவல் ஏதும் இல்லை. இந்தத் தீவுகளிலும் சுனாமி பயம் பரவியுள்ளது

Vanuatu earthquake damages buildings

A strong earthquake struck off the coast of Vanuatu, cracking streets, buildings and a bridge, smashing a water pipe and disrupting power supplies at Luganville on the island of Espiritu Santo.

The 7.2 quake originated 172 kilometres beneath the ocean floor 45 kilometres southeast of Luganville and hit at 4:08 am local time, the US Geological Survey reported

"There are no casualties reported at this stage," said Esrom Molita of the nation's National Disaster Management Office in the capital, Port Vila, adding the powerful quake did not trigger any tsunamis around the archipelago.

"Cracks up to 6-7 metres long and nearly 15 centimetres wide are in the main street," of Luganville and cracking had also occurred in several buildings and in a bridge over a river, he said.

"Goods have fallen down in the shops," Molita said, adding that a fuel tank for the local power generator had snapped from its stand during the quake and "power is out in some areas" of the town.

"It was a severe shake, but short and sharp," he said. "If it had gone on for three minutes, the damage would have been very bad."

Molita said people living alongside a river running through the town had been evacuated as local officials feared a tsunami or flooding in the wake of the quake, but "that has not happened and people are now back in their homes."

It was the first earthquake with a magnitude of at least 7 in 122 days, said Waverly Person, a geophysicist with US Geological Survey's National Earthquake Information Centre in Colorado.

Normally a quake in that range can cause buildings to collapse and deaths in populated areas.

Vanuatu, formerly called the New Hebrides Islands, is part of the Pacific "Ring of Fire" - a zone of frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions 40,000 kilometres long that encircles the basin of the Pacific Ocean.

Vanuatu lies 2,250 kilometres northeast of Sydney.
