தை மாதம் ஒரு சிறப்பான மாதம்! / Thai is a special month for Tamils! / பகுதி / Part 04 [In English & Tamil]

தொல்காப்பியத்திற்கு அடுத்ததாக சங்க காலத்தில் எழுதப் பட்ட எட்டுத் தொகை / பத்துப் பாட்டுகளை இனி பார்ப்போம். இங்கு பல பாடல்கள், "தைஇத் திங்கள்" பற்றிப் பேசுகின்றன!ஆனால் அது தான் ஆண்டின் தொடக்கம் என எங்கும் குறிக்கப் படவில்லை.

"மன்ற எருமை மலர்தலைக் கார்ஆன் 
இன்தீம் பால்பயங் கொண்மார் கன்றுவிட்டு
..............................
தைஇத் திங்கள் தண்கயம் படியும் 
பெருந்தோள் குறுமகள் அல்லது 
மருந்துபிறி தில்லையான் உற்ற நோய்க்கே"
[நற்றிணை 80]

தொழுவத்துள்ள அகன்ற தலையை யுடைய கரிய எருமையின் மிக இனிய பால் நிரம்பக் கறந்து கொள்ளும் பொருட்டு அவற்றின் கன்றுகளைத் தொழுவத்து நிறுத்தி விட்டு; .......... என்னைப் பெறுமாறு தான் எடுத்துக் கொண்ட நோன்பின் பயனாகத் தைத் திங்களிலே தண்ணிய நீரில் ஆடுகின்ற பெரிய தோளையுடைய அவ்விள மகளே யான் உற்ற நோயை நீக்கும் மருந்தாயமைந்துள்ளாள்.அவளல்லது பிறிதொரு மருந்து இல்லைகாண்.

"வேம்பின் பைங்காய் என்தோழி தரினே,
தேம்பூங் கட்டி என்றனிர் ; இனியே,
பாரி பறம்பின் பனிச்சுனைத் தெண்ணீர்
தைஇத் திங்கள் தண்ணிய தரினும்
வெய்ய உவர்க்கும் என்றனிர் 
ஐய ! அற்றால் அன்பின் பாலே !"
(குறுந்தொகை - 196 )

தலைவனே! முன்பு (திருமணத்துக்கு முந்திய களவுக் காதலின் போது) என் தலைவி வேம்பின் காயை உனக்குத் தந்தாள். அதனை அழகிய இனிக்கும் வெல்லக் கட்டி என்று சொன்னாய்.  இப்போதோ தை மாதத்தில் குளிர்ந்து கிடக்கும் பாரியின் பறம்பு மலையில் உள்ள குளிர்ச் சுனையின் நீரை அவள் தருகிறாள். ‘அது வெம்மையாய் உள்ளது -  உவர்ப்பாய் உள்ளது’ என்று கூறுகிறாய். நின் அன்பின் தன்மை இப்படிப் பட்டதாகி விட்டதே !

மந்தி ஒன்று தினைக் கதிரை கவர்ந்து சென்று தன் கடுவன் குரங்குடன் இருந்து உண்டது. அதைப் பார்த்த சங்கப் புலவருக்கு  அக் காட்சி பனியால்  நனைந்த முதுகோடு நோன்பு நோற்கும் பெண்கள் தைமாத விரத உணவை உண்ண இருந்தது போல் தோன்றியது. அதனை;

“வான்பெயல் நனைந்த புறத்த நோன்பியர்
தைஊண் இருக்கையின்.........” - 
(நற்றிணை: 22: 6 - 7)
என  நற்றிணை வரியில் படம் பிடித்துள்ளார், 

பெண்கள் உலக நன்மைக்காக நோன்பிருந்து நீராடியது போல, நல்ல கணவன் தமக்குக் கிடைக்க வேண்டுமென தைத்திங்களில் நீராடி வீடு வீடாகச் சென்று பாடி தாம் பெற்றதை பலருக்கும் உவந்து கொடுத்தை 

“வையெயிற்றவர் நாப்பண் வகையணிப் பொலிந்து நீ  தையில் நீராடி தவம் தலைப் படுவையோ” 
கலித்தொகை (59:12-13) எனவும்

“பொய்தல மகளையாய்ப் பிறர்மனைப் பாடி நீ எய்திய பலர்க்கீந்த பயன் பயக்கிற்பதோ” 
கலித்தொகை (59;16-17) எனவும், 

கலித்தொகை சொல்லும். 

"செவியிற் கேட்பினும் சொல்லிறந்து வெகுள்வோள்
கண்ணிற் காணின் எனா குவள்கொல்
நறுவீ  ஐம்பால் மகளிர் ஆடும்
தைஇத் தண்கயம் போலப்
பலர்படிந்து உண்ணுநின் பரத்தை மார்பே."
[ஐங்குறுநூறு 84] 

'உன் மனைவி உன்மேல் சொல்லில் அடங்காத கோபத்திலிருக்கிறாள். ஏனென்றால், தைமாத நோன்பிருக்கும் பெண்கள் பலரும் ஒரே குளத்தி்ல் தோய்ந்து நீராடுவார்கள் அல்லவா?அப்படி உன்னுடைய மார்பு, பல பெண்கள் தோய்ந்து, துய்க்கும் கயமாக (குளமாக) இருக்கிறது என்பது உன் மனைவிக்குத் தெரிந்திருக்கிறது அல்லவா!

"தேஎம் தீந்தொடைச் சீறியாழ்ப் பாண!
........................................
தைஇத் திங்கள் தண்கயம் போல்
கொளக் கொளக் குறையாக் கூழுடை வியனகர்
........................................
நினைக்க வேண்டா; வாழ்க, அவன் தாளே!" 
[புறநானூறு. 70:6-7]

தேன் போன்ற இனிய இசையை அளிக்கும் சிறிய யாழையுடைய பாண!  ...... கிள்ளி வளவனின் நாடு, தை மாதத்தில் தெளிந்த குளிர்ந்த நீரையுடைய குளம் போல் கொள்ளக் கொள்ளக் குறையாத உணவுப் பொருட்களுடைய அகன்ற பெரிய நகரங்களுடையது .....  பரிசு கிடைக்குமா என்று நீ ஐயப்படத் தேவையில்லை. வாழ்க பண்ணனின் தாள்கள்! 

‘தாயருகே நின்று தவத் தைந்நீராடுதல் நீயறிதி வையை நதி’ என்கிறது பரிபாடல்-11:91-92. 

ஆகவே தமிழ் மரபில் & சங்க இலக்கியங்களில் ..... மிகச் சிறப்பாக / மிக அதிகமாகப் பேசப்படும் / போற்றப்படும் மாதம் = தை!  அல்லது  "தைஇத் திங்கள்". அது மட்டும் அல்ல  தை-ன்னாலே .... மதம் கலவாமல் .... தமிழ் மட்டும் தனித்து தெரியும்! 

"அருவியில் தவம் முடித்து 
இருவராய் சேர்த்தது தையே!
ஊருக்கு பொங்கல் படைத்து 
பெருவிழா தந்தது தையே!
முருகிற்கு அழகு சேர்த்து 
ஒருபூசம் தந்தது தையே!
பெருமை பற்பல படைத்து 
அருமை மாதம் தையே!"

Thai is a special month for Tamils! / Part 04

Thousands of years ago, urbanisation and mercantile activity along the western and eastern coast of what is today Kerala and Tamil Nadu led to the development of four large Tamil political states (Chera, Chola, Pandya and Pallavas) and a number of smaller states warring amongst themselves for dominance. Between the 7th century BC and the 3rd century AD, Tamil people also produced native literature that came to be called Sangam literature. In many of this songs / poems, it says about the "month of Thai" as well as the bathing in the "month of Thai", many times. Some of these are given below : 

"There is no other medicine
for this disease that distresses me,
except the wide-shouldered young girl
who bathes in a cold pond in the month
of Thai,

"Before,
if my friend gave you
a bitter unripe neem fruit,
you would say that
it was a sweet sugar cube.
Now,
even if she gives you
clear, cold water from Pari’s
Parampu Mountain, chilled
by Thai month’s cold,
you will say
that it is warm and brackish.
Sir, such is the nature of your love. "

"a female monkey, along with her
crude mate steals huge clusters
of mature millet spikes,
crushes them with her palms,
collects the grain and stuffs
her cheeks, curving them along
with her jaws, and, as rain pours
down, they with their wet bodies
appear like austere ritualists

Will your thai month ritual bath help you now?"

and there is constant abundance like a Thai month pond whose

mothers in the month of Thai? Tell me, O Vaiyai River!"

Paavi nonbu is an important tradition in the lives of Tamils from times of antiquity. The memory of it exists till today, thanks to AndaaL who immortalized that memory in her composition, Thiruppavai. The most detailed account of this nonbu and the nonbu done in the month of thai (known as thai- neeraadal) are found in paripadal & This help us in knowing the culture and tradition of Tamils who lived 2000 years ago.as below : 

"On the day of Full moon in Maargazhi [மார்கழி], young unmarried girls, wearing pretty bangles, accompanied by their mothers go to the Vaigai & they pray  “May the wide land not become hot!” as they bathe with their mothers who know traditions, who show them how to perform the rituals. Accordingly, the girls take bath in the cold waters of the river which is brushed by a gentle breeze. The girls make merry in the waters in the month of Thai with "poi aadal" [பொய்யாடல் / innocent dance]. ie The moves done by the girls are very innocent, for which one can not attribute any idea of love or sexual desire in them. Probably the dances were on love themes but the moves by the girls seemed to suggest that they are not love-struck. That is why the dance was called  "poi aadal". After the dances on the banks and in the waters as they take bath, The girls  join their mothers and follow the instructions to do the prayer. when chilly winds blow along the sandy river shores, they dry their clothing in the ritual fire. 

That is  "Month of Thai"  is the only month which is mentioned so many times in the ancient Tamil literature & it is the most favourite month among the ancient Tamils.& further, it was the immediate month following the harvesting month of Maarkazhi, and as a matter of thanksgiving to the Sun for providing rich harvest to farmers it was celebrated as "Thamilar Thirunaal" or the Prosperity Day of the Tamils. As such Pongal is generally celebrated without any affinity to any religion as a secular festivals.

Hence Month of Thai is a special month for Tamils!. Now I am giving below a  short Tamil poem written by me regarding month of Thai:

"அருவியில் தவம்     முடித்து  
இருவராய்  சேர்த்தது தையே!
ஊருக்கு    பொங்கல் படைத்து 
பெருவிழா  தந்தது  தையே! 
முருகிற்கு  அழகு    சேர்த்து 
ஒருபூசம்   தந்தது  தையே!
பெருமை   பற்பல   படைத்து  
அருமை    மாதம்   தையே!"
