Subject: Letter to MEPs

There is going to be a debate on Sri Lanka in the European Parliament on Thursday 12 February.

Please write to the MEPs in your region.

Anyone in any given region can write to ALL the MEPs in that region. I live in London and I can write to all nine MEPs in that region and they will have to look after my interests.

Please make sure which region you are in - there are 12 regions in the UK.

Please give your postal addresses when you write to your MEPs. They all wish to know that you are from THEIR region.

Please ring up your friends and relatives all over the UK and give them the eddresses(email+address=eddress)

Dear

Genocide of Tamils in Sri Lanka

We appeal to you to urge for immediate ceasefire in Sri Lanka. In the last ten days alone hundreds of civilians have been killed and thousands injured by aerial bombing and intense shelling of civilian areas and three hospitals in the Vanni region. Attacking hospitals is a war crime under Geneva

convention in which Sri Lanka is a signatory. Though the government created a 'safe zone', its merciless bombing and shelling has created carnage in the absence of independent reporters:

http://www.tamilnet.com/art.html?catid=13&artid=28349 <http://www.tamilnet.com/art.html?catid=13&artid=28349>

Up to a few days ago the injured have been prevented from coming out of the region for treatment at hospitals. This itself is a war crime. In interviews with BBC and Skynews, Sri Lankan Defense Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapakse says that the hospitals are legitimate targets if they exist outside the so

called "safety zone"!

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/7868080.stm <http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/7868080.stm>

Gotabhaya also classifies dissent as treason and intimidates local journalists and lawyers. Journalists from BBC, Sky and Aljazeera and Ambassadors to Sri Lanka from Switzerland and Germany have been warned that they would be 'chased away' if they query the human rights violations of the government

in the Vanni region. The Vanni area may be the focus of the international community but the rest of Northeast has also been living in utter fear and hopelessness under heavy militariasation in the absence of reporters.

The ''family business'' of the President and his three brothers in the government has been i. preventing the All Party Committee to formulate a reasonable peace proposal and ii. appointing the independent Commissions without constituting the Constitution Council which is supposed to recommend the

Commissions. This is the pseudo-democracy of Sri Lanka that is giving impunity to the armed forces and paramilitaries for the thousands of abduction-murders in the Northeast of the country. Colombo along with the rest of the South is silenced by the death squads allegedly under the Defence Ministry.

Two months back Genocide Prevention Project based in New York released a report in which it has identified a ''red list'' of 8 countries including Sri Lanka and an ''orange list'' of 25 countries including the Palestinian Territories. Sri Lanka has been the worst human rights violator in South Asia

in the 2008 Report of Asian Centre for Human Rights.

The ICRC, the only international body working in the Vanni has been warning the world of the immense humanitarian crisis there:

http://www.icrc.org/web/eng/siteeng0.nsf/h...anka-news270109

Please call for immediate Ceasefire in Sri Lanka and halt the GENOCIDE of Tamils there. This is possible only with the UN monitoring presence in the country. Please urge the UN for immediate action and save innocent lives.
