Tamils all over the world are agitating against the tragedy facing their brethrens in the current war efforts in the north of Sri Lanka. Discounting the LTTE influence, there is real feeling amongst the Tamil people. The anger and frustration within the diaspora Tamil civil society has never been reflected in the scale experienced in the recent years.

The tragedy is of course, the government of Sri Lanka projected to finish is operations against the LTTE by the end of December 2008. The Army Commander Lt General Sarath Fonseka’s retirement too was tied to this projection. When the deadline became unachievable, his term too has been extended for another year and five months have lapsed since then and the government is only getting further embroiled in its arrogance and the Tamil civilians caught in the war has become like cattle’s entering the slaughter house.

In all the countries where Tamil presence in large numbers is known, there are continuous agitations to the end the war to save the people. In the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, Sri Lankan Tamil plight has became the main election campaign issue. Continuous agitations are taking place in many western countries and as a result, the Sri Lankan Tamil issue has reached the corridors of the UN Security Council.

Whilst this process is underway all over the world, Tamils in Colombo and other places in Sri Lanka are maintaining dumfounded silence over the heinous crimes being perpetrated against their people in the north. Not a single Tamil had come to the street to publicly protest against the indiscriminate war against the innocent civilian population. Neither peace loving moderate Sinhalese had carried out any campaign for the Tamils to join force with them.

Sri Lanka is a democracy and demonstrations carried out by the Tamils outside Sri Lanka are also available for them in the democratic state of Sri Lanka. Unfortunately, the government’s attitude and branding any democratic resentment from Tamils as LTTE agitation and treating anyone involving in any demonstrations with contempt has kept the agonised Tamils within the confines of their homes. The heavy handed conduct of the state military and intelligence services have numbed the Tamil civil society in Sri Lanka.

The freedom enjoyed by the Sinhala extremist to protest publicly has been systematically suppressed for the Tamils. LTTE is the bogy story that is used to abuse the Tamil civilian society in Sri Lanka.

All the indications are the Government of Sri Lanka is frustrated with the worldwide democratic agitations of the Tamils. These demonstrations have effectively brought about greater awareness of the Tamils plight internationally. The indications are that the government is frustrated with this and is formulating the next stage of its agenda to suppress the voices of the Tamils even in the international arena.

Sri Lankan High Commissions and Embassies have been instructed to campaign against the widespread Tamil agitations. The government paid media propagandist of Tamil origin have been asked to publish news against the Tamil campaign in the West.

It is clear, Sri Lanka run by the majority Sinhala leadership wants to make the minority a silent and an abject minority in Sri Lanka and also world over.
