Host: Midwest Tamil Sangam

Date: Friday, June 19, 2009

Time: 12:00pm - 3:30pm

Location: Lincoln Statue, Capitol State Building in Springfield, IL

The Midwest Tamil Sangam would like to invite you to join us at the Lincoln Statue, Capitol State Building in Springfield on June 19, 2009 at 2 pm as we appeal to the public and civic leaders to break the silence regarding the crisis facing the Tamil population in Sri Lanka.

As you may have heard, the Sri Lankan government celebrated their defeat of theLiberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. However, the government failed to take responsibility for innocent civilians they killed throughout the war and have not addressed the grievances of the Tamil population. Currently, three hundred thousand internally displaced Tamil civilians are being held in internment camps facing starvation, unsanitaryconditions, lack of medication, rape and disappearances. Despite the end of the civil war, the media and health organizations still do not have full access to the civilians held in internment camps.

Anyone reporting on the conditions of the internment camps is either expelled from the country or detained. In fact, three physicians who worked in the war zone saving Tamil lives are now being held for questioning for an undetermined period of time. They are the same physicians who reported government bombing of hospitals that they were working in during the war.

The responsibility of alerting the world to what is actually happening in Sri Lanka has now fallen to those Tamils living outside of the country. To bring awareness to the situation, three students are walking from Chicago to Washington D.C., educating American citizens of the crisis facing Sri Lankan Tamils. On June 19, 2009, they will arrive

in Springfield, IL and we would be honored if you would join us and support our campaign to "Break the Silence on Sri Lanka."
