The Christmas Story In Retrospect

2042 years ago Jesus Christ was born to fulfill a promise made to redeem the world of sin and save mankind from hell. The birth of Christ which was awaited for years with interest by sages and Kings did not take place in a palace or a beautiful home. There were no royalty or dignitary to receive him. Was he born in his parental house or a decent hospital? The answer is no. His birth took place in a manger, away from the home and country of his parents, who at the time of his birth could have been described as internally displaced.

Yes, internally displaced, because his parents Joseph and Mary had to leave Nazareth and go to Bethlehem, their city of birth for enumeration. Joseph and Mary even though they were of royal descent did not have sufficient resources to book into a decent place or hotel for the arrival of the precious child. They were turned away from inns and hotels which were said to be full.

Born in the manger covered with straw and watched by rams, ewes and the Shepherds shorn of any semblance of luxury for a divine child. The swathing clothes in which he was wrapped at birth was a forerunner of the bandages that were to cover his body, when he was laid in the tomb. There were many attempts on his life within days of his birth, but they were all averted with divine intervention.

Many infants became victims of those attempts to kill him. The world that despised him at birth as well as when he preached the good news of an after-life, mocked him, tortured him made him carry a cross and killed him like a criminal. The Jews considered Barabbas, a convict and murderer more eligible to live than Jesus.

Today Christmas is celebrated in all nooks and corners of the world. Preparations for Christmas start very early in the year, not only among the Christians, but among every other group of persons who wants to make a quick buck or two. The house decorator, the textile trader, furniture dealer, travel agent, hotelier and others who benefit from making Christmas a season to make money. The birth of Christ and the Christmas day have now become symbols of trade.

Even the Christians who celebrate Christmas think of lavish food, drinks, new dresses and entertainments as the main events in their Christmas wish list. No one thinks of the have-nots around the world or those just next to them who do not even possess a change of dress or have a square meal. Jesus Christ resides among the internally displaced persons around the world, who have been rendered homeless. He is there in Rwanda, Darfur, Palestine and Ceylon, now Sri Lanka, where citizens are denied even the basic human rights. The right to walk in their own country without fear or to seek employment or to engage in agriculture, fishing or any other pursuit.

The words Internally displaced persons or IDPs, have been mentioned millions of times in the newspaper, radio, television, from public platforms and in private conversations. How does a person become an IDP? In Sri Lanka, the entire Tamil community became internally displaced due to the government of the country waging a war with her own people, who wanted certain rights as human beings in the land of their birth. The war lasted over sixty years since independence, aided and abetted by several countries, who instead of mediating, have remained patient observers or co-conspirators to support a genocide on the citizens of that country.

Like Mary, there have been thousands of Tamil mothers, who were internally displaced while being pregnant. Bizarre stories coming from the witness-less war zone tells of forced abortion performed on those mothers by government doctors on the orders of the government. There is similarity between the abortions of unborn Tamil children in Sri Lanka's war zone and the massacre of children ordered by Herod with the hope of killing baby Jesus.

There are plenty of messages emanating from the President and or his Ministers, wishing the people merry Christmas and extending to them their share of the joy. However, thousands and thousands of civilians continue to live under sub-human conditions in temporary huts, enclosed by barbed wire fences and supervised around the clock by armed guards with order to shoot in the democratic republic called Sri Lanka.

The Tamil people have during the last fifty to sixty Christmas seasons endured brutal bombings of churches and places of worship. Can we forget what happened on Christmas mid-night mass at the Cathedral in Batticaloa, where the Tamil Member of Parliament was brutally killed in the presence of the Bishop, clergy and thousands of worshippers? Several years have passed, but the hidden hand that drew the trigger could not be identified by the government of this democracy. Terrorism was a pass word used to subjugate the Tamils and arrest innocent civilians under draconian laws that has no place in a democratic society.

The President has called for an election, hoping that the victories gained by subduing the Tamils (his country men), who wanted their birth right, will have him returned. His promise of settling the sixty year old Constitutional problem after his re-election is a ploy to satisfy the UN and other world bodies. The contestant for Presidency with him is his former Army Commander whose attitude towards the Tamils is well known. For the Tamils it is a "Hobson's choice". They hunted the Tamils collectively. Now they want to have a chance to annihilate them completely. Another bleak Christmas and yet another uneventful new year are expected for those Tamils, Rwandans, Kenyans and Palestinians who have become internally displaced in their own lands.

Canada's Parliament has been discussing for the last weeks about the Taliban detainees being given to the Afghan soldiers for abuse, but in Sri Lanka the Tamils have been brutally abused without discrimination of age, gender or civil status for so many years. There is none to take up the case of those abuses. The media personnel, the members of Parliament, pregnant mothers, babies, and seniors, have been victims of a government's brutal rule.

Law and order are absent in a country, where law enforcers are fully involved in killing the innocent, like those young babies sacrificed in the story of the pursuit of Jesus, protected through Divine intervention. Unfortunately, in this situation there are no such underlying circumstances, no Saviour in waiting... no hope?
