Mullivaikkal Tragedy - The Growing List of Complicity

By: Sridas Sivasambo

Ban Ki Moon’s emissary Vijay Nambiar who was dispatched to Sri Lanka, apparently to stop the predictable blood bath in the final days of the conflict met with his brother Satish Nambiar, the Sri Lankan Government’s Military Consultant and, of course, the Rajapakses, Narayanans and Menons directing the Tamil Genocide. The fate of those unfortunate civilians in Mullivaikkal and environs were decided and sealed. Having ‘failed’ in his mission Vijay Nambiar returned to his boss in New York and personally apprised him of the ‘success’ of his mission. Yes, in hind sight that would be the characterization. Success for whom? is the begging question. The readers may recall the fact that Vijay Nambiar refused to give an official report about his mission on his return from Sri Lanka. Yes, the truth had to be nauseating and hence the choice of omission over commission. Well, the boss, Ban Ki Moon should have pursued this omission with consequences for the errant Official. Did he? He did not. This makes him too a party to the massacre at Mullivaikal.

The ‘plot’ hatched by the Sri Lankan Authorities with substantial input from its collaborators in Delhi and also, though difficult to believe or stomach, blessings from the U.S Establishment, secured by Shivshankar Menon through that fateful one -on-one with Hilary Clinton, was executed in a most inhumane manner, with the total black-out of witnesses and callous disregard for the lives of several thousand Tamil civilians

Therefore, is it a wonder that Ban Ki Moon is dragging his feet in matters around the potential indictment on charges of war crimes. The Indian Government, for the same reason, is doing everything it can to deflect international efforts at bringing the perpetrators to book. It wouldn’t be necessary to stretch one’s imagination in concluding that the Sri Lankan “LLRC”, the sham of a Commission, is also a brain child of this U.N. Secretary General, just as his famous ‘panel’ to report on “accountability” matters with respect to accusations of war crimes. Yes, there is bound to be no progress in the pursuit of justice for the victims till Ban Ki Moon remains the Head of the U.N. The same gloomy scenario obtains while Sonia Gandhi and the Congress party hold the reins of power in the Indian sub-continent.

Obama ‘misplacing ’ his ‘moral compass’ when prevailed upon by the Establishment’s various Committees, apparently in the interest of the country’s economy, is now a fact of life. Yes, since the John Kerry report, the U.S Government’s perspective on the issues around Sri Lanka changed radically. This, after an in depth study of China’s in- roads in the Indian Ocean with deft manipulation of Sri Lanka. The U.S. decided to have a stake, not willing to overlook the geopolitical implications of China’s moves. It needed Sri Lankan support. Yes, the U.S., unprincipled as their policies are, will align with the devil as long as it serves their long term goals. Just consider the current state of affairs in Egypt, for instance. More than a Billion Dollars worth of Arms are reported to be sent annually to Mubarak from the U.S. What happens to the Arms manufacturer’s bread and butter if that revenue is stifled? It will be the vested interest of these arms merchants to promote continuation of Mubarak, the Dictator, in power. On the other hand they are also forced to work on plan B too, in case the popular uprising against the Dictator succeeds. Hence, the ‘on the fence’ posturing of the U.S Establishment for the discerning to notice! By now it should be clear that no help will be forthcoming from the U.S or any other power for the indictment of the war criminals of Sri Lanka, despite calls for appropriate investigations by a properly constituted international panel, emanating from HRW, Amnesty International, the Crisis Group and other such. This, of course, is due to the fact that genuine scrutiny will bring out the fact of all of their involvement in the ‘plot’ culminating in the blood bath on the beach. Such pessimism notwithstanding the victims, the Tamils, have to keep up the pressure on the international community, prevailing upon it to dispense justice by indicting the criminals for war crimes.

The secession of South Sudan with a referendum has to be viewed as a silver lining for the predicament of Eelam Tamils. There are too many parallels for the Sri Lankan Government (or the international community) to ignore, especially when it is compounded by South Sudan’s overt acknowledgement of the TGTE. From this writer’s view point the TGTE has its work cut out. No effort should be spared for building on this recognition by the nascent State. Retractors are bound to underline points of dis-similarity between South Sudan and Eelam. That should, in no way, stifle concerted effort by the Tamils in the Diaspora by harping on the parallels, demanding action from the international community. Positive results might take time but let us be assured that we are on the right path to realize our dream, Tamil Eelam.
