23 November 2013 By Frances Harrison There are reports that the Sri Lankan security forces have been detaining and questioning Tamils who gave interviews to the British media covering the Commonwealth meeting in the island last week. In other cases family members of those who gave interviews or helped the media have been threatened and intimidated. The victims do not want publicity for their individual cases for fear of further retaliation but the intimidation has involved threatening phone calls, security forces turning up at people’s homes, as well as visits to children’s schools, work places and detention for hours of questioning. This is in additio…

Diego Garcia's Hidden Role in Sri Lankan Politics By S.N. Amazing how the three vital factors regarding real estate came into play even in the plight of the Tamils -- location, location, and location. Diego Garcia? Is he of any relation to the tall, dark and handsome Cuban, Andy Garcia? The very gentleman who set many female hearts afire when he played the most coveted roles in decades, the hot-headed son of Sonny Corleone and mob protégé of Michael Corloene, Vincent Mancini; in 1990 Francis Ford Coppola’s Godfather: Part III -- Unfortunately, not! Then again, if you knew of Diego Garcia, you are clearly in the slim minority, for the name Diego …

Dissecting the Semi-fictionalized HRW Report by Sachi Sri Kantha To paraphrase an aphorism of Einstein on 'quality,' "It's no use if the wrapper is of better quality than the meat it covers." In responding to the flurry of outbursts from the Eelam Tamil diaspora to the half-baked, mud-slinging report released this month, Human Rights Watch (HRW) stated: "Human Rights Watch investigations are based on qualitative rather than quantitative research" [Reuters report, March 16, 2006]. The two key words here are quality and research. Now, let me quote from an authority on research. To paraphrase an aphorism of Einstein on 'quality,' "It's no use if the wrapper…

Sri Lanka was for decades an example of how sectarian conflict can wreck an otherwise fortunate country. It has had three years to show how devolving power to an ethnic minority can bring about lasting peace. Now it looks as if the opportunity will be lost. Sri Lanka paid an enormous price to bring 26 years of civil war to an end. An estimated 40,000 people died in the last months of fighting in 2009, bringing the conflict’s final toll to more than 100,000. This includes a sitting president, Ranasinghe Premadasa, and a former Indian prime minister, Rajiv Gandhi, who were killed in suicide bombings by the separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. Yet there was h…

Most of about $4.5bn in foreign aid pledges is contingent on peace moves. 'Obstacle' Mr Patel said there was no way "to politely skirt" the issue of renewed and deepening conflict in the island.
