Last month the United Nations published a highly critical internal report in which it admitted it didn’t do enough to protect Tamil civilians in the final months of the Sri Lanka civil war. In late 2008, the UN had withdrawn staff from the northern part of the country in anticipation of the Sri Lanka government’s bloody military offensive against the LTTE (Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, more commonly known as Tamil Tigers). Tamil civilians had pleaded with the UN to stay at the time, but the international organization said it was unable to ensure the safety of its staff members. Still, the new report raises real questions about the international community’s response du…

Sri Lankan Tamil asylum seekers in the UK are at risk of torture if returned to Sri Lanka, according to a landmark ruling by a British tribunal. An asylum and immigration tribunal on Monday upheld an appeal by a Sri Lankan refugee known only as Mr LP. The ruling is also intended to offer guidance for similar cases in the UK. Despite many expecting a ‘naming and shaming’ in the content of the UN report on Sri Lanka, UN sources in Geneva state that the names of individuals accused of perpetrating the alleged abuses during the final phases of the conflict in Sri Lanka were never intended to be published in the report. But last week, London mayor Boris Johnson admitted that many of the lanes had been “turned off” because they were not needed because so …

The Eelam Tamils have trod a careful path wondering if the new government can change their fate. One may recall, it was the Democrats under Barrack Obama who nailed Sri Lanka with successive resolutions from 2012 onwards at the UNHRC. India is not likely to make a response to the contents of the report of the United Nations high commissioner for human rights on Sri Lanka, as it mainly waits for the language of the resolution being drafted by US and western nations. On Wednesday, the landmark report on the last few years of Sri Lanka’s civil war was tabled in Wednesday, which called upon the setting up of “hybrid” courts with international and Sri Lankan lawyers and jurists to probe and address human rights violations by security forces and Tamil tigers. Incidentally, the UN human rights commissioner Zeid Ra’ad al-Hussein said that the report does not conclude that a “genocide” had been committed …

This period saw the deaths of 70,000-140,000 Tamil civilians, primarily due to the Sri Lankan military’s intentional shelling of safe zones and extrajudicial executions, the maiming of thousands from that shelling, and at least hundreds of incidents of sexual violence. . In the week ahead of May 18th, PEARL is deconstructing the term genocide. Our series of posts will build on arguments presented in last year’s photo exhibit “Tamil Resistance & Resilience In the Face of Genocide” to demonstrate the final phase of the armed conflict was a genocide committed by the Sri Lankan government against the Tamil people. . On my way to the meeting, it was pouring with rain.
