The Tamils in the U.S. are freaking out and asking Hillary Clinton to call for a ceasefire. What do you say? MR. 2. U.S. shouldn't help Sri Lanka regime with our tax dollars editorials BY AHILAN SIVAGANESAN If you think Naziism or apartheid are long gone, you would do well to continue reading. Last month in Sri Lanka, 500 Tamils were forcibly evicted by police from the capital city of Colombo. They, along with 300 others who were detained, either lived in the capital or had been visiting for reasons including medical treatment. The police chief's explanation: ethnic minority Tamils cannot stay in the capital "without a valid reason." "Police didn't listen to us. They tried to beat us, they where scolding and they put us into the vehicles," explained a 54-year old m…

  3. The United States will deliver a sharp public rebuke to Sri Lanka at the U.N. Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in March for failing to pursue those responsible for abuses as government forces were crushing Tamil rebels in 2009, officials said on Monday. A three-member U.S. delegation is in Colombo on a five-day visit to discuss issues including progress in implementing the recommendations of Sri Lanka's own official investigation into the war, which called for the prosecution of soldiers suspected of killing civilians. But Washington appeared dissatisfied enough to announce that it would repeat its action of last March, when it sponsored a resolution at the UNHRC urging…

  5. It seems parties interested in Sri Lanka signing the Acquisition and Cross Services Agreement (ACSA) with the U.S., were keen on Sri Lankan troops learning human rights ironically, from another military known for grave violations of human rights. Political column of Sri Lanka’s popular English weekly, Sunday Times alleges it was then Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera and then Foreign Secretary Prasad Kariyawasam who had pressured then Defense Secretary Karunasena Hettiarachchi, to expedite the passage of ACSA. The column goes on to note that apart from services facilities being granted to US troops who will visit Sri Lanka, one of the other elements included in th…

An asylum and immigration tribunal on Monday upheld an appeal by a Sri Lankan refugee known only as Mr LP. The ruling is also intended to offer guidance for similar cases in the UK. Mr LP's lawyers argued that he was at risk of torture if he returned home because of his perceived support for Tamil Tiger separatists. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/6937471.stm

However, soundings suggest they will be down by only a few percentage points which, after last's year spike in demand, will not yet ring alarm bells or suggest school-leavers are abandoning the idea of going to university. Ukraine’s other land grab Ukraine is the breadbasket of Europe, and its land is changing hands. Ukraine might not look like a good financial investment after a year at war with no end in sight, but Harvard, Saudi Arabia, a handful of oligarchs, and the United States investment manager The Vanguard Group see it differently. They are just a few of the investors who have been buying up Ukrainian land – and its rich, fertile soil – en masse, while many Ukrainian farmers argue it should stay in Ukrainian hands. https://www.aljazeera.com/podcasts/2023/4/7/ukraines-other-land-grab
