This week Amos Roberts reports from Sri Lanka, where the feared Tamil Tigers are surrounded in small pocket of the country and the government is moving in for the kill.

The 25 year old war against the Tigers has seen thousands killed and now an estimated 150,000 civilians are trapped in the middle of this brutal conflict.

As Roberts reports, no independent journalists are allowed near the war zone and those who dare criticise the government or the military are either detained or murdered by shadowy forces.

8:30PM SUNDAYS

FIGHTING TIGERS FAST FACT

G'Day Dateliners,

It's not easy being a journalist in Third World countries at the best of times… But it is particularly tough to be a journalist in war-torn Sri Lanka right now.

On Dateline this week, Video Journalist Amos Roberts looks at the difficulties Sri Lanka's media faces while reporting on the decades-old war as government forces close in on the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam or the 'Tamil Tigers' as they're better known in a tiny pocket in the north-east.

Sri Lanka has actually been described as the second most dangerous place in the world for journalists to work - after Iraq.

In Australia, we more or less take for granted the freedoms that journalists have to report on things that matter. In Sri Lanka, on the other hand, journalism can be a life and death battle to get the truth out.

Outrageously, Sri Lankan newspaper editors not "toeing the Government line" are being intimidated, threatened and even abducted. Amos has talked with one editor who told him that in the last two years alone, up to nine of his journalists have lost their lives, two have disappeared and many have been injured in the line of duty.

Nevertheless, a few bold individuals continue to report in these harrowing conditions. Let's hope they live to tell the tale, as it were.

It's is an absolute tragedy that this once Asian paradise seems unable or unwilling to rise from the ashes of decades of war.

Meanwhile, from arch-Catholic Mexico, VJ David O'Shea reports on a bizarre cult that worships Santa Muerte - or 'Saint Death'. Needless to say, this kind of activity has not gone unnoticed or unchallenged by the Catholic Church.

The Church is concerned by the rise of a cult it believes is attracting criminals, drug traffickers, rapists, homosexuals and prostitutes - quite an undesirable line-up!

The cult's off-the-wall rituals include making offerings of tequila shots, marijuana, cigars and cigarettes to their 'Saint'. Santa Muerte sounds like quite a party kind of guy!

And, of course, there's our regular interview with a leading figure on a pressing international issue.

See you 8.30pm on Sunday.

George Negus.
