Sri Lanka : More than a thousand killed today in the "No Fire Zone"

Sri Lanka, after two days, has entered into so called "No Fire Zone" (NFZ), using heavy weapons, including "cluster bombs". It has also used captured civilians as human shields to advance into NFZ.

More than 400 children have also being killed and/or wounded.

This carnage cannot happen in the eyes of civilized world. We have to collectively act immediately to stop this before any one life is lost.

Canada must do all in its power to bring an immediate ceasefire. We have to go beyond statements to stop this tragedy!

Truly,

Sri Lanka : Thanks for Canada’s statements, but we need actions to stop Sri Lanka

Thanks for calling ceasefire and letting much needed aid to reach Internally Displaced People (IDPs).

What we and our partner countries need a forceful act against Sri Lanka so that it agrees to a permanent ceasefire. We have given ample opportunities to Sri Lanka to halt the violence against civilians.

It is now time Canada takes some serious meaningful actions against Sri Lanka. Until that happens, thousands more will die and we as a member of UN, would be guilty of not stopping this genocide in the hands of Sri Lanka.

Truly,

Sri Lanka - Canadians want action from our government

Many Canadians remain gravely concerned at the continuing conflict in northern Sri Lanka that threatens many thousands of civilian lives, namely Tamils.

The United Nations is engaged. But, Sri Lanka continue to refuse all calls, and the civilian carnage continues.

Protests and demonstrations around the world, including the one in Ottawa, have highlighted the tragic loss of life of innocent civilians in Sri Lanka. Further loss of life will only compound that tragedy. The Tamil community are an integral part of Canada and continue to make an important contribution to Canadian society. We have seen friends and relatives perish, and our loved ones are still at grave risk from the fighting. You have heard our voice and thanks for listening.

Please help us to bring this terrible conflict to an end that respects aspirations of Tamils.

Truly,

Sri Lanka - No time to waste

As a Canadian, I believe Canada has a responsibility to solve the ongoing problem in Srilanka. I am providing the situations below to support my point.

1) During the Peace Talks of LTTE and Srilankan Gov't, Canada banned the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.

2) When Srialnkan Gov't withdrew itself form Peace Talks, the Canadian Gov't did not even condemn Srilanka.

3) Canada does not condemn the Genocide on Tamils in Srilanka.

Yet Canada did advise federal solution through Forum of Federation and appointed a member as part of IIGEP, Prof. Bruce Matthews.

Therefore, I believe that Canadian Gov't respect humanity and treat all people same without any different. I am looking forward to see the changes in my government toward to solve the ethnic problem in Srilanka and save the Tamil people and their identity.

Thank you,

Yours truly,

Re: Situation of Tamils in Sri Lanka

As a Canadian, I urge Canada to take serious actions to safeguard the plight of civilians in the hands of Sri Lankan government.

U.N. human rights chief warned Friday that "civilian casualties could reach "catastrophic" proportions if the two sides do not suspend their fighting," and that the Sri Lankan military and the Tamil rebels may have committed war crimes. Ms. Pillay also said the "army has repeatedly shelled inside safe "no-fire" zones set up for the civilians, and that "a range of credible sources" showed that more than 2,800 civilians had been killed and more than 7,000 wounded since January 20."

"Indeed, at the time Srebrenica was a designated United Nations "safe area" supposedly under the protection of the United Nations Security Council, whose member states refused to lift even one finger to save these Bosnians from Serbian genocide," says Prof. Boyle who won two World Court Orders on the basis of the 1948 Genocide Convention that were overwhelmingly in favor of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina against the rump Yugoslavia to cease and desist from committing all acts of genocide against the Bosnians.

Everyday Sri Lankan government dropping bombs in the "safe zone", it declared. And this has been happening for many months in full knowledge of the civilized world. It is time Canada leads with examples that the act by Sri Lanka is not tolerated.

Let us not let another human tragedy take place ! Let us save civilians from Sri Lanka !

Thanks

Re: The plight of 300000 Tamils in Sri Lanka

Both the Canada and Sri Lanka are contracting parties to the Four Geneva Conventions of 1949. Common article 1 thereof provides: 'The High Contracting Parties undertake to respect and to ensure respect for the present Convention in all circumstances.'

Canadian government has an absolute obligation 'to ensure respect' for the Geneva Conventions 'in all circumstances.' With respect to the current situation in Vanni where the lives and well-being of 250,000 Tamils are at risk and in grave danger, the Canadian government has an absolute obligation to intervene directly with both the Government of Sri Lanka (GOSL) and the LTTE in order to protect these innocent Tamil civilians and to terminate the massive war crimes that are currently being inflicted upon them by the GOSL in violation of the Geneva Conventions.

Last week, Sri Lanka removed Norway from its official role as peace broker since US talked LTTE via Norway. By sacking of Norway, Colombo wants to complete its agenda of Tamil subjugation before Canada or others can act.

Tamils all over the world continue to demonstrate overwhelmingly of their support to the LTTE, including in Ottawa. There is no point in the hanging on the ‘terrorism’ excuse anymore.

In avoiding further tragedy of civilians, Canada must start talking to LTTE directly!

Thanks,

Re: Situation in Sri Lanka, Canada must act decisively !

Sri Lankan Military has moved its heavy weapons including tanks close to the safe-zone after the two days ceasefire. And as the Defense Secretary Gotabaya Rajapakse has stated, the assault has started. So far, more than 500 people have died! Many are dying without medicine and now people are starving!

Sri Lankan Govt only believes in military solution and has clearly no regards for human lives. I am voicing my anger towards the international community and my Canadian government for its light handed approach to the genocide.

LTTE is just one of the symptoms of the actions against the Sri Lankan terrorism. I believe killing 3000 civilians in 3 months in the name of crushing LTTE would only bring further animosity and violent retaliation. Sri Lanka hopes to end the war, but peace is far away.

Unless the world community acts now - today, this minute - decisively the carnage set to continue. I urge Canadian Govt. to consider the following actions since Sri Lanka has rejected all the calls for an immediate ceasefire:

* Recall our envoy to Sri Lanka in protest

* Eject Sri Lankan diplomat to Canada

* Impose sanctions against Sri Lanka

* Recognize Tamils right to self-determination

We can't let another Tamil killed by the Sri Lankan killers. We can't let another Tamil child injured by the Sri Lankan terror.

Thanks
