Mullivaikal Remembrance Day 2011

DATE: Wednesday, 18 May 2011

VENUE: Trafalgar Square

(Nearest Tube: Charing Cross)

The release of the UN Panel Report on Sri Lanka estimates that tens of thousands of civilians were killed during the final stages of the conflict between Sri Lankan forces and the LTTE in 2009. The three-member panel found credible allegations that comprise five core categories of potential serious violations committed by the Government in the final stages of the conflict, including killing of civilians through widespread shelling and the denial of humanitarian assistance.

Navi Pillay, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, said she hoped that the "disturbing new information will shock the conscience of the international community into finally taking serious action".

- Gordon Weiss, the UN spokesman in Sri Lanka during the government's offensive against the LTTE in 2009, Channel 4, 18 April 2011

Please make every effort to attend and unite to call for Justice for Tamils.

Candlelight Vigil for War Crimes Day

Time Wednesday, May 18 · 4:00pm - 9:00pm

Location Queen's Park , Toronto, Canada

May 2009 marked the conclusion of a three decade long armed conflict in Sri Lanka resulting in the massacre of tens of thousands of Tamil civilians. Allegations of severe violations of human rights and international law against Tamil civilians are abundant. The last months of the Sri Lankan Armed Forces’ assault on Tamil civilians are perhaps one of the worst massacres in recent memory.

In lieu of the events of May 2009 and the T...amil community’s commitment to the preservation of human rights and accountability, Canadian-Tamils have marked the month of May as Tamil Genocide Remembrance Month to commemorate the tens of thousands of Tamil civilians killed in the 2009 conclusion of the armed conflict in Sri Lanka.

Community organizations will be engaged in a variety of events throughout the month in recognition of the genocide and to highlight the ongoing plight of Tamils in the island of Sri Lanka. This Candlelight Vigil is being organized by the NCCT as part of Tamil Genocide Remembrance Month.
