Family seeks answers about man who died in police custody

MONTREAL— Questions are swirling following the death of a man in police custody last Friday December 8, 2012.

Kesavan Ketheswaran, 26, was handcuffed following a confrontation involving a woman and two men at the corner of Decarie and Royalmount at 1:15 p.m on June 8.

According to police, he attempted to flee and somehow lost balance and banged his head against a car bumper.

The family was informed of the incident 12 hours after it occurred. The man was in a coma for two days before dying.

Montreal police would not comment on the incident when asked by CTV Montreal.

A coroner's report will shed light on the cause of death of the man, who had previously been arrested for drug-related offenses.

His family was heartbroken and perplexed by the loss.

"I didn't even get to see him before he died," said sister Tharssini Subramaniam who was overcome with emotion.

His father couldn't quite grasp the terrible news.

"I didn't believe he had died. I showed picture to police. I say this him? they say ‘yes,'" said father Ketheswaran Subramanian.

The man's siblings aren't convinced that their brother died in the fashion reported.

"The injuries were severe. They don't look like they're from a fall. If you see the side of his head doesn't look like a fall. It looks like he got hit or something," said brother Arthan Subramaian.
