Statement by Liberal Leader Bob Rae on the Situation in Jaffna, Sri Lanka

TORONTO- Liberal Leader Bob Rae made the following statement today on the situation in Jaffna, Sri Lanka:

“News is slowly emerging of an attack on the men’s and women’s dormitories at Jaffna University, with some fifty students being sent to hospital, and many arrested without warrants.

Sri Lanka’s civil peace is still under threat from its own government. The United States government has issued a call for a respect for civil liberties and pluralism. Canadians can hardly do less in the face of continuing attacks on journalists and others expressing their opinions.

I had the chance, nearly a decade ago, to give a couple of talks at Jaffna University, and as it was during a time of cease fire and efforts to create a different governing structure students were enthusiastic participants in discussions about federalism and pluralism. With the resumption of fighting, defeat of the Tamil Tigers and death of tens of thousands of innocent civilians, all has changed.

Canada’s vigilance in defence of free speech and an open society must continue. The government of Sri Lanka must be held accountable for these violations of human rights.”

Hon. Bob Rae,

Thanks for the statement on Jaffna students and the worsening situation in the North and East of Sri Lanka. This is a very prompt and much needed statement. One would hope the remaining students would be released immediately.

Unless there is a collective effort by the international community, long term peace will remain elusive.

With regards,

Statement from the Official Opposition Human Rights Critic, Wayne Marston on the arrest of students in Jaffna, Sri Lanka

கனடாவின் உத்தியோகபூர்வ எதிர்க்கட்சியான பொதுவுடைமை கட்சி, யாழ். மாணவர்கள் கைது சம்பந்தமாக வெளியிட்ட அறிக்கை:

The Official Opposition calls on the government of Canada to work with the international community to pressure the government of Sri Lanka to promptly release the students recently arrested in Jaffna. P. Tharshananth, Sanmugam Solaman, Kanesamoorthy Sutharsan and K. Jenemajeyamenan were arrested without warrants, and in the absence of clear evidence linking them to any alleged crime.

On 27 November security forces broke up a lamp lighting ceremony at the women’s hostel at Jaffna University, reportedly breaking lamps, threatening students and pointing weapons at them. The following day students responded with a silent protest and short march and held placards denouncing the restrictions on freedom of expression. At least 20 undergraduates were injured and beaten by riot police and officers in civilian dress.

New Democrats believe that freedom of speech, freedom of assembly and the principles of fundamental justice are basic human rights. The Government of Sri Lanka must secure these rights for the entire population. The Sri Lankan Government must ensure an end to attacks by security forces against students and peaceful demonstrators and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.

MP Parm Gill Expresses Concern Regarding Abuses of Civil Liberties in Sri Lanka

Brampton, ON - Member of Parliament Parm Gill expressed concern over the arrests and detention of student demonstrators at Jaffna University in Sri Lanka, and the violation of civil liberties that has occurred. "A number of my constituents have expressed their concerns about the events that have taken place at Jaffna University," said MP Gill. "I share their concerns for the treatment of the students involved."

"As Canadians, we take basic civil liberties such as freedom of speech, conscience, and association, for granted. I urge the Sri Lankan Government to respect the right of their citizens to free, peaceful assembly and the right to express themselves."

MP Gill joins with other members of the Government, including Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird, in calling for a peaceful resolution to the protests and resulting unrest at Jaffna University. Earlier this month, Minister Baird called on the Sri Lankan government to, "Finally put the people of that country first."

MP Gill extended his thoughts to those affected by these recent events, and implores the international community to put pressure on the government of Sri Lanka to ensure the rights of all involved are protected.
