Atom: Smallest representative of a particular element, which shows the properties of that element.

There are 3 main sub atomic particles in the Atom, Electron, Proton and Neutron.

Atom has a nucleus and the electron cloud around it.

Neutrons and proton are at the nucleus. Nucleolus gives the mass to the atom and Electron give the shape to the atom.

If we compare the size, if nucleus is a size of an orange then electron cloud will be equal to the size of a football stadium.

Mass number: As name states mass number should represent the mass of the element.

Electron is 1838 times lighter than Proton and Neutron. Hence, we can ignore the weight of an electron when we consider the mass of an atom.

Hence, Mass number = Proton + Neutron

Ignoring Weight of the electron is like, ignoring the weight of your wallet inside the car when you weigh your car. Obviously wallet is not going to make a big difference on the weight of the car.

Atomic number: The number of protons in an atom.

Atomic number is a number plate of an element; there are not two elements with the same atomic number in the world.

That is, if an element has 11 Proton then it is Na and if you add one more proton then it will be Mg.

Periodic Table

It’s just like collection of cars. From Top to bottom similar cars are arranged

Although many scientists made an attempt to organise the elements, Dmitri Mendeleev came up with the tangible solution.

He ordered the elements according to the Atomic number, and he left space for the elements that were not found in his time.

Periodic table will have two main groupings

  • Periods
  • Groups

                                            Period

           Groups

Periodic Table has essential bunch of information

Groups are vertical columns of the periodic table

Periods are horizontal rows on the periodic table

Periodic table can be split in to 4 Blocks.

s, p, d and f are them

The sub orbital where the last electron filled up decides which block that element is belongs to.

Some of the groups in the periodic table will have the special names

First group-Alkali Metals

Second group-Alkali Earth Metals

Seventh Group- Halogens

Eighth group- Noble gases

Let’s meet on the next tip…
