A Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldier was killed and another injured in a claymore mine attack on troops engaged road clearing operation at Periyaneelansenai along Uyilankulam-Adamban Old Road, around 7.30 a.m., Wednesday. Following the explosion unidentified men in lying ambush fired at soldiers, police in the northwestern town said.

The body of the dead soldier, Meegedera Pushpakumara Ariaysena, 23, of Matale, was handed over to Mannar general hospital.

Mr.T.J.Pirapaharan, Additional Mannar Magistrate inspected the body and ordered the hospital authorities to hand over the body to the SLA after post-mortem examination, hospital sources said.

The injured soldier, Dhamikka, 23, was first warded in Mannar hospital and later transferred to Anuradhapura hospital.

Meanwhile, a Sri Lankan Police Sergeant Gunatilaka, 40, was seriously injured when unidentified men fired at a group of policemen at Semmantivu in Murunkan in Mannar district, around 8.30 a.m, Wednesday. He was first admitted to the Murunkan hospital and later transferred to Anuradhapura hospital, police said.
