Devoid of Tamils

The intense conflict has now made the Sampur region virtually devoid of Tamil civilians. At least 12 villages have faced utter destruction while other villages in the Muttur east and Eechilampattu divisions are also affected.

The bulk of Tamil civilians in these areas have crossed over to Batticaloa and are in the Koralaipattu north division as refugees. 62,643 people from 15, 540 families are refugees in the Batticaloa District. Of these about 46,000 were displaced people from Trincomalee District.

The government has used security as an excuse to prevent food, medicine, aid etc. from reaching the affected areas. NGOs and media are not allowed in while a military campaign of genocidal proportions is conducted.

International humanitarian law has been defiantly flouted. All sense of proportionality regarding the use of force has been disregarded. Moreover the Rajapakse regime has boldly stated that it’s military objectives openly followed suit.

Even now plans are afoot to de-populate the strategic Sampur region of Tamils and set up a high security zone for the military extending from Muttur jetty to Ilakkanthai. Muslims will be resettled in Muttur and Thoppur as a ‘buffer.’

The Rajapakse regime will orchestrate a jubilant victory celebration of Sampur in the days to come. What is not realised is that this ‘victory’ is in reality a great crime against humanity.

Organisations like Amnesty International which issued a critique of Israel in Lebanon should critically examine what went on in Muttur east critically and condemn both the GOSL and LTTE for their conduct.
