15 LTTE men killed in clash with Sri Lankan navy

Colombo, Feb. 28 (AP): The Sri Lankan navy battled a flotilla of Tamil Tiger boats and at least 15 rebels were believed killed as they attempted to infiltrate a strategic port in the northeast, the Defence Ministry said Wednesday.

About 14 vessels carrying fighters from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam were attempting to enter the Trincomalee port - home to a major military base - when the navy intercepted and engaged them late Tuesday, said military spokesman Brig. Prasad Samarasinghe.

``Our naval troops confronted the LTTE ... and managed to destroy or damage five of their boats,'' Samarasinghe said.

The rest of the rebel vessels quickly retreated, he said, and the navy suffered no losses.

Sri Lanka's air force, meanwhile, attacked a rebel base in an eastern jungle, Samarasinghe said, but there was no information on casualties or damage.

The rebels could not immediately be reached for comment.

புல்மோட்டை கடற்பரப்பில் ரோந்தில் ஈடுப்பட்டிருந்த கடற்படையினர் பகுதியிலிருந்து சந்தேகத்திற்கிடமான 14 படகுகள் வருவதை அவதானித்துள்ளனர். இதனையடுத்து கடற்படையினர் தாக்குதல் நடத்தி இரு படகுகளை தாக்கியழித்த்துடன் 3 படகுகளை சேதமாக்கியுள்ளனர். இத்தாக்குதலில் 15 விடுதலை புலிப்போரளிகள் கொல்லப்பட்டிருக்கலாம் என ஊடக மத்திய நிலையம் தெரிவித்துள்ளது.

இத்தாக்குதலில் 2 கடற்படையினர் காயமடைந்துள்ளதாகவும் இராணுவத்தினரும் இத்தாக்குதலினை முறியடித்துள்ளதாகவும் கடற்படையினருக்கு உதவியழித்ததாவும் தேசிய பாதுபாப்பு ஊடக மத்திய நிலையம் தெரிவித்துள்ளது..
