Solomons town hit by 3m wave

A 3M-high wall of water slammed into the Solomon Islands town of Gizo, causing widespread damage, according to an Australian woman living there.

Aftershocks following a massive earthquake near the Solomons had made residents too frightened to return, said Kerrie Kennedy.

Ms Kennedy is in Sydney visiting family but said her new house in Gizo was first rocked by the earthquake and than swamped by a tsunami.

From many phone calls to her husband Danny in the Solomons, Ms Kennedy has heard Gizo, her home for the past 19 years, suffered extensive damage from the double whammy.

"The town has certainly sustained a lot of damage because of the wall of water that went through," Ms Kennedy, co-owner of a diving centre in Gizo, said.

"I don't know exactly where it went, but I heard one description of a ten-foot (three-metre) wave that had gone through.

"There are houses destroyed - our next door neighbour's house has been flattened, whereas our house hasn't been.

"Inside, my husband described, our house has been trashed because there isn't anything that was on a shelf, in a cupboard - there's nothing not broken, but the house itself is OK."

Ms Kennedy said most people were still too afraid to return to their homes because of aftershocks.

"The earthquake hasn't stopped. It's still shaking now," she said.

"Most people are actually not willing to go into their houses at the moment, they're sitting outside because they're just waiting to see what happens."

Ms Kennedy said the town was damaged by the earthquake and the tsunami.

"I don't think there's anyone who hasn't been affected by it," she said.

"It's all repairable, and can be cleaned up - it's just the last thing we really need right now."

Ms Kennedy said although their business had suffered, their shop was still standing and tourists should be able to return within a few days.

Quake devastates Solomons town

THOUSANDS are feared homeless and witnesses have described panic on streets in the Solomon Islands town worst hit by this morning's earthquake and ensuing tsunami.

Locals in Gizo are trying to form emergency teams to organise supplies following the 8.1-magnitude earthquake, which triggered warnings of dangerous sea conditions along Australia's east coast.

Those warnings have now been downgraded, with authorities saying normal activity can resume at sea and on beaches "with caution".

There was chaos in far north Queensland early today when the tsunami alerts were first issued, with traffic jams building in Cairns as motorists sought higher ground (more).

A tsunami did not materialise, unlike in the Solomon Islands, where officials said entire villages had been wiped out by the tsunami (more).

Beaches in NSW and Queensland were closed for a period earlier after Bureau of Meteorology officials said that while there "may not be a massive wall of water" about to hit the east coast, conditions could remain dangerous through the day.

Chaos in the Solomons Islands

Dive shop owner and 22-year Gizo resident Danny Kennedy described the devastation to NEWS.com.au as aftershocks kept coming each minute this morning.

"Sometime about 7.50am things just started shaking," Mr Kennedy said. "It lasted about 90 seconds and I was pitched around from side to side.

"I'm here now and everything is broken inside the house. Both our boats have been pitched up about 40m from where they were moored in the evening.

"There was maybe a two to three metre wave but that was quite a force.

"It just swept through town. There's dugout canoes left in the streets."

Mr Kennedy said older-style houses built on struts had all been destroyed and from an initial survey of the damage he estimated there would be up to 3000 people homeless.

"The village communities to the north of us there's not a lot left," he said.

"People are walking around dazed - the town is in a complete panic now.

"Our biggest problem now is food and water. We are trying to mobilize tins of food and bottles of water to a location where we can distribute it evenly." (More)

Tasmania could be affected from 12.30pm (AEST) onwards, the bureau said.

A Geoscience Australia spokeswoman said the tsunami was between 10 and 20 cm at the single point it was measured, posing little threat to residents in isolated areas of Australia.

"It's not a really big (threat) for the coast of Australia," she said.

Bureau of Meteorology spokesman Rob Webb said that the tsumani sounded small and had so far only been measured in one place, but still had the potential to cause damage in the Pacific.

"It can act very differently in different locations,'' he said. "It's quite a dangerous situation that we are monitoring very closely - 8.1 is enough to generate a tsumani across the Pacific."

Emergency services advise people to leave the beaches, and ask people on boats to return to shore.

"If you see the sea go out like a very low tide then immediately go to high ground," bureau warnings say.

Tsunami strikes Solomon Islands

A tsunami has swept ashore in the Solomon Islands after a strong undersea earthquake in the South Pacific.

Initial reports from outlying, remote areas say at least eight people have been killed, but local officials fear the death toll could rise much higher.

The National Disaster Council chairman told reporters that some villages had been "completely wiped out".

Tsunami warnings have also been issued for Papua New Guinea, north-east Australia, and other nearby islands.

The quake measured 8.0 and hit at 0740 local time on Monday (2040 GMT Sunday).

It struck 345km (215 miles) north-west of the Solomon Islands' capital Honiara, north-east of Australia, the US Geological Survey said, at a depth of 10km (six miles) below the surface.

Evacuation

One of the worst affected areas is the town of Gizo, in the west of the Solomons, which was only 45km (25 miles) from the epicentre of the quake.

All the houses near the sea were flattened," as water "right up to your head" swept through the town, said Gizo resident Judith Kennedy.

"A lot of houses have collapsed. The whole town is still shaking," she told the Associated Press.

Harry Wickham, a hotel worker in Gizo, told New Zealand television that "there was 10ft of water rushing through town".

There are reports that a local hospital has been inundated by water and at least three people are confirmed dead in the town.

Britain's deputy high commissioner in Honiara told the BBC that four people were also missing from Mono Island.

The earthquake was also felt in the capital, Honiara. David Leeming, who lives in the city, told the BBC News website that his five-storey office building shook and staff left the building for safety.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center initially issued a warning for all countries in the South Pacific region.

Later it was down-scaled, but authorities in the Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, New Caledonia, north-eastern Australia, Tuvalu, Kiribati, and Fiji were being advised to stay on alert.

Officials in Australia said the coast of New South Wales could face dangerous waves and flooding in the coming hours.

Several beaches in Sydney have been closed as a precaution.

Experts in Japan and Hawaii were also monitoring the situation.

A powerful undersea earthquake has struck off the Solomon Islands, triggering a tsunami that destroyed several villages and killed at least three people.

Countries from Australia to Hawaii went on alert after the magnitude-8 jolt on Monday.

Fred Fakari, head of the National Disaster Council, said "some villages are completely wiped out".

Police and residents said a 3m wall of water hit Gizo, a regional centre in the west, just 40km from the quake's epicentre, inundating buildings and causing widespread destruction.

Fakari said information on the extent of damage remained sketchy, especially in the more isolated western areas.

A series of aftershocks, with a magnitude of up to 6.7, kept residents in the area on edge.

Al Jazeera's correspondent, Dan Nolan, said three people were confirmed dead.

He reported that many people living close to the sea in Gizo managed to escape to safety after being warned to flee to higher ground.

Sergeant Godfrey Abiah of the Solomon Islands police said officers in Gizo had been warning residents to move to higher ground away from the coast when the tsunami hit, but communication links were lost soon afterwards.

"We have lost radio contact with the two police stations down there and we're not getting any clear picture from down there," he said.

Nolan said electricity had also been cut off and only a few people were able to communicate by UHF radio or mobile phone.

Danny Kennedy, a dive shop owner and provincial politician in Gizo, told Reuters: "There are quite large boats sitting in the middle of the road. Many of the houses that were on stilts are sitting on the ground. A number of the coastal communities have been completely wiped out."

He said the hospital had been evacuated and patients had been taken to a doctor's house on higher ground, with more than 2,000 left homeless.

The National Disaster Management Office said up to 60 buildings had been destroyed including houses.

From the capital Honiara, Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corp. said residents on Simbo island had reported waves travelling up to 200m inland, damaging homes.

Geological agencies, including those in Australia and Japan, put the magnitude of the quake at 8.1 while the US Geological Survey revised its earlier estimate to 8.

The US Geological Survey said the quake struck about 10km beneath the sea floor about 350km northwest of the Solomons capital of Honiara at 7:39am on Monday (20:39 GMT on Sunday).

The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre issued a warning for Papua New Guinea and a lower-level "tsunami watch" for other places, including most South Pacific countries.

Beaches in Queensland and New South Wales on Australia's east coast were shut and some ferry services in Sydney were cancelled.

Warren Young, chief lifeguard of Gold Coast City Council in Queensland, said: "We just feel it's best to err on the side of caution in this respect."

HONIARA, Solomon Islands -- A powerful undersea earthquake Monday in the South Pacific sent a tsunami several yards high crashing into the Solomon Islands, devastating at least one village, officials and residents said.

Police and residents said a wave about 10 feet high struck the western town of Gizo, inundating buildings and causing widespread destruction. A man who answered the telephone at the Gizo police station said there were initial reports that eight people, six of them children, had been killed by the tsunami but they were still unconfirmed. The phone cut out abruptly before the man gave his name.

Gizo resident Judith Kennedy said water "right up to your head" swept through the town.

"All the houses near the sea were flattened," she told The Associated Press by telephone. "The downtown area is a very big mess from the tsunami and the earthquake," she added. "A lot of houses have collapsed. The whole town is still shaking" from aftershocks.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake measured magnitude-8.0 and struck at 7:39 a.m. about 6 miles beneath the sea floor, 217 miles northwest of the capital, Honiara.

The Pacific region from Australia to Hawaii went on high alert for several hours after the quake struck between the islands of Bougainville and New Georgia, though officials canceled a region-wide tsunami warning after the danger period passed.

Gizo, a regional center, is just 25 miles from the earthquake's epicenter.

Another witness in the town, dive shop owner Danny Kennedy, estimated the height of the wave at 10 feet.

"I'm driving down the street - there are boats in the middle of the road, buildings have completely collapsed and fallen down," he said in a telephone interview.

"We're just trying to mobilize water and food, and shelter for people at the moment because ... in the town alone there's going to be between 2,000-3,000 homeless. It's not a very good scene at the moment."

Harry Wickham, who owns a waterfront hotel in Gizo, said the damage was widespread.

"The waves came up probably about 10 feet and swept through town," he told Australia's Nine Network television by telephone. "There's a lot of water damage and a lot of debris floating around," he added.

"Ten feet of water washing through town - you can imagine what damage it has done here."

Julian McLeod of the Solomon Islands National Disaster Management Office said there were unconfirmed reports that two villages in the country's far west were flooded.

"Two villages were reported to have been completely inundated," McLeod told Australian Broadcasting Corp. radio. "We have received reports of four people missing."

A town in the west, Munda, was believed to be badly damaged, officials and the Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corp. said, but communications were difficult and details were not confirmed.

The Hawaii-based Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reported the quake at magnitude 8.1, and said a temblor of that strength could cause a destructive tsunami and issued a warning bulletin for the Solomon Islands and neighboring Papua New Guinea.

It ordered a lower-level "tsunami watch" for other places, including most South Pacific countries, but later canceled the alert. The center said a 6-inch wave had been reported in Honiara.

Police Sgt. Godfrey Abiah said in Honiara that police in Gizo had received warning about a possible tsunami and were helping people leave the town for higher ground when the wave hit.

"We have lost radio contact with the two police stations down there and we're not getting any clear picture from down there," he told The Associated Press by telephone.

பசிபிக் பிராந்தியத்தில் உள்ள மிகச் சிறிய தீவுக்கூட்டம்தான் சாலமன் தீவு. இங்கு இன்று அதிகாலை இந்திய நேரப்படி கடலுக்கு அடியில் மிகச் சக்தி வாய்ந்த நிலநடுக்கம் ஏற்பட்டது. ரிக்டர் அளவுகோலில் இது 8 ரிக்டராக இருந்தது.

இந்த பூகம்பம் காரணமாக சுனாமி அலைகள் தாக்கின. சாலமன் தீவின் தலைநகர் ஹோனியாராவுக்கு வட மேற்கில் உள்ள கிஸோ தீவு கடும் பாதிப்பை சந்தித்துள்ளது. இங்குள்ள ஏராளமான வீடுகள், ஒரு மருத்துவமனை ஆகியவை சேதமைடந்தன.

பலர் இந்த சுனாமி அலைத் தாக்குதல் மற்றும் பூகம்பத்திற்கு பலியாகியிருக்கலாம் என அஞ்சப்படுகிறது. இதுவரை 2 பேர் பலியானதாக அதிகாரப்பூர்வமாக அறிவிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

சுனாமி அலைத் தாக்குதலின்போது கடல் அலைகள் 5 மீட்டர் அளவுக்கு உயரம் கொண்டிருந்ததாக ேநரில் பார்த்தவர்கள் ெதரிவித்தனர். பல வீடுகளுக்குள்கடல் நீர் புகுந்துள்ளது.

சாலமன் தீவின் மேற்கில் உள்ள சோய்சியூல் தீவில் ஏராளமான வீடுகளுக்குல் கடல் நீர் புகுந்து விட்டது. அங்கிருந்தவர்கள் பாதுகாப்பான இடங்களுக்கு அப்புறப்படுத்தப்பட்டுள்ளன.

சாலமன் தீவுக்கு அருகில் உள்ள பாபுவா நியூ கினியாவில் கடல் உள்வாங்கியதால் பொதுமக்கள் பீதியடைந்து கடலோரத்திலிருந்து இடம் பெயர்ந்தனர்.

பூகம்பத்தின் ைமயம், ஹோனியாராவின் வட மேற்கில் மையம் கொண்டிருந்ததாகவும், உள்ளூர் ேநரப்படி அதிகாலை 2.20 மணிக்கு பூகம்பம் ஏற்பட்டதாகவும் ஹவாயில் உள்ள சுனாமி எச்சரிக்கை மையம் தெரிவித்துள்ளது.

ஜப்பான், ஆஸ்திரேலியா உள்ளிட்ட நாடுகளுக்கும் சுனாமி எச்சரிக்கை விடப்பட்டுள்ளது. பசிபிக் பிராந்தியத்தில் உள்ள அனைத்து நாடுகளும் முன்ெனச்சரிக்கை நடவடிக்கைைய மேற்ெகாண்டுள்ளன. இருப்பினும் சாலமன் தீவைத் தவிர வேறு எங்கும் சுனாமி தாக்கியதாக தகவல் இல்லை.

சாலமன் தீவுகளுக்கு அதிக அளவில் சுற்றுலாப் பயணிகள் வருவது வழக்கம். பூகம்பம் மற்றும் சுனாமி தாக்குதலால் அங்கு தங்கியுள்ள சுற்றுலாப் பயணிகளிடையே பெரும் பீதி நிலவுகிறது.

இந்த நில நடுக்கத்தை தொடர்ந்து அந்த தீவுகளின் கடலோர பகுதிகளை சுனாமி பேரலைகள் தாக்கியது. கட லோர பகுதிகளை 5 மீட்டர் உயரத்துக்கு எழுந்த ராட்சத அலைகள் தாக்கியது. சாலமன் தீவில் மேற்கு கடலோர தாழ் வான கிராமங்களில் கடல்நீர் புகுந்தது. சில இடங்களில் நிலச்சரிவும் ஏற்பட்டது.

இந்த நில நடுக்கம், சுனாமி மற்றும் நிலச்சரிவுகளில் 3 பேர் பலியாகி விட்டனர். இன்னும் 4 பேரை காணவில்லை. அவர்களும் சுனாமி பேரலை களில் இறந்திருக்கலாம் என்று கூறப் படுகிறது.

இந்த நில நடுக்கத்தை தொடர்ந்து பசிபிக் கடல் பகுதியில் உள்ள சுனாமி எச்சரிக்கை மையத்தில் இருந்து அபாய எச்சரிக்கை விடுக்கப்பட்டது.

ஆஸ்திரேலியா, இந்தோ னேஷியா, பப்புவா நிï சினிய, வனாட்டாவ், மார்ஷல் தீவுகள், ஜப்பான் உள்பட 10 நாடுகளுக்கு சுனாமி எச்சரிக்கை விடப்பட்டது. மீட்பு பணிகளுக்கு தயாராக இருக்கும் படியும் அதிகாரிகளுக்கு உத் தரவிடப்பட்டது.

சாலமன் தீவில் சுனாமி தாக்கிய பகுதிகளில் தகவல் தொடர்பு துண்டிக்கப் பட்டுள்ளதால் உயிர் சேதம் பற்றிய முழு தகவல்கள் அதிகாரிகளுக்கு கிடைக்கவில்லை. எனவே உயிர் சேதம் இன்னும் அதிகமாக இருக்கும் என்று அஞ்சப்படுகிறது.

அட இங்க அவுஸ்திரேலியாவில சுனாமி அடிக்குதோ இல்லையோ. அடிக்கும் எண்டு 550 வருடங்களுக்கு முன்னால ஒரு கிறீக் தீர்க்கதரிசி சொல்லிப்போட்டு போயிட்டார் என்று ஒரு புத்தகத்தில வாசித்தன். அவர் சொன்ன படி நடக்குதே. அப்ப அந்த மனுசனுக்கு எப்படி அந்த சக்தி வந்தது. அவர் அமெரிக்காவின் லொஸ்சாஜல்ஸ், அவுஸ்த்ரேலியா வடக்கு, நியூசிலாந்து, பப்பு, சொலமன், கவாய், வன்குவார் எல்லாம் தண்ணியில தாழும் என்று கூட சொன்னவர்.
