Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day: 11th Anniversary

Featured Replies

[Live Streaming] – May 18th, 2020 @ 6:00 PM

Toronto: On May 18th, Tamils across the world come together to commemorate Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day. This year, we mark 11 years since the height of the Tamil genocide that took place in Mullivaaikaal , Sri Lanka, also known as the Mullivaaikaal Genocide. Estimates from the UN and independent sources list the death toll to range from 40 - 75,000 innocent civilian massacred during this time. An independent estimate suggests more than 75,000 innocent civilians were killed. The genocidal pogroms of the Sri Lankan state caused the persecution of innocent people, displaced many and caused many to seek refuge elsewhere. Despite the end of the armed conflict, there has been no accountability or justice for the deaths of innocent Tamils. Stability in this region will remain elusive until Tamils can live peacefully in a land free of oppression in all aspects of their life.

Unanimous passing of the motion asking the "the UN to establish an international independent investigation into allegations of Genocide against Tamils committed in Sri Lanka, including during the last phase of the armed conflict in 2009” by Canada’s House of Commons (June 19, 2019) and unanimous passing of the second reading of the “Tamil Genocide Education Week Bill” by Ontario’s Legislative Assembly (May 16, 2019) have been significant steps in the right direction. Such efforts will allow Tamil Canadians to continuously advocate, at every available opportunity, for stronger measures to be taken by Canada to hold Sri Lanka accountable for the Tamil genocide, have Sri Lanka fully implement the UN Human Rights Council resolutions related to these matters, stop the dismantling of the attributes of the Tamil Nation and protect Tamils in Sri Lanka.

Furthermore, the proclamation of May 18 as Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day by the City of Toronto and the City of Brampton is an opportunity for us to honour and remember those impacted by the Mullivaaikaal Genocide in Sri Lanka.

Due to the global implications of the COVID-19 pandemic and recommendations by public health officials to practice physical distancing along with suspension of numerous institutions and public gatherings across the country, Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day will be hosted remotely via online streaming on Monday, May 18, 2020 at 6:00 PM. The link to online streaming will be shared closer to the date to all members of the media for sharing with their respective audiences. We request all Tamil Canadians commemorate May 18th in their homes by wearing the colour black, lighting a candle and participating in a virtual vigil as part of the activities included in the online streaming. Joining together as a community on this solemn day will allow us to remember, commit, and ensure such a tragedy is never repeated again and support long-term peace, accountability and reconciliation in Sri Lanka.

During this unprecedented time of the COVID-19 pandemic, we would also like to convey that Tamils in Sri Lanka need our assistance now more than ever. Due to the lockdown curfew that has been imposed in Sri Lanka, Tamils in particular have been negatively impacted in multiple ways including shortage of basic necessities such as food. We kindly request all diaspora Tamils to take responsibility in contributing to Tamils in Sri Lanka in all ways possible to prevent negative implications or health complications that may arise due to starvation.

Thank you!

Global Simulcasting of Mullivaikkaal Remembrance on May 18 2020

The Australian Tamil Congress (ATC), the British Tamils Forum (BTF), the Canadian Tamil Congress (CTC), the Irish Tamil Forum (ITF), the Solidarity Group for Peace and Justice (SGPJ-South Africa) and the United States Tamil Action Group (USTAG) will be hosting a virtual joint worldwide May 18 – Mullivaikkaal Tamil Remembrance Day on Monday, May 18th 2020, to commemorate the 11th year anniversary of the loss of tens of thousands of innocent Tamil civilians, Maveerar and Tamil national heroes in Mullivaikkaal, Sri Lanka during the last stages of the war.

The 2-hour live event will start promptly at 5 PM for UK/Ireland, 12 Noon Eastern Standard time for US and Canada, and 2:00 AM (19th) Sydney, Australia. Due to time differences, some of the Australian remembrance day event will be a recording of their live event (Monday 7PM to 8 PM AEST) earlier on that day.

This worldwide event will start with a moment of silence conveyed online from Australia, UK, Canada, Ireland, South Africa, USA and other parts of the world, to pay tribute to the innocent lives lost. Following this, the worldwide participants will lay flowers and light candles to pay respect to those who lost their lives in various phases of the Tamil Genocide, including the mass atrocity crimes committed by Sri Lanka state forces in the #no_fire_zones leading to Mullivaikkaal. We also lend our support to the Global Campaign: “Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day,” (details to follow) which calls for lighting of candles at 18:18 on May 18 in remembrance of the lives lost.

Following the paying of respect, the leaders of ATC, BTF, CTC, ITF, SGPJ-SA and USTAG will speak with special emphasis on the continuing thrust for justice and accountability for atrocity crimes perpetrated towards the end of the war, and the expectations from the victimized Tamil community for stronger actions by the governments around the world towards the path of finding truth and restorative justice to the victims.

Tamil devotional songs and dances will be featured from various countries. Live or video messages will also be shared by many elected officials and prominent human rights defenders from key countries.

The technology link that will allow thousands of global Tamil diaspora participants to join the proceedings will be emailed closer to the event. Interested participants are invited to send their requests for links to the respective country organizations listed at the end.
