Shambo slaughter backed by court

The Court of Appeal has overturned a decision to block the slaughter of Shambo, the "sacred" temple bullock.

The six-year-old animal, which is kept in a Carmarthenshire temple by Hindu monks, has tested positive for TB.

The Skanda Vale community said it was "devastated" by the decision and vowed to continue to find ways of saving him.

The Welsh Assembly Government said there was no timetable but it wanted to act with "the minimum of distress to the animal and its carers."

The community has fought a hard campaign since the TB test returned positive in April, saying they were guarding against Shambo infecting other animals.

But they have faced opposition from many quarters, including farmers, who say the diseased animal provides a threat to the spread of TB among their herds.

A week ago, High Court judge Gary Hickinbottom ruled that destroying Shambo, which is being kept at the community in Llanpumsaint, would be unlawful.

He said two slaughter orders had failed to give enough weight to the rights of the monks. But on Monday the appeal court in London upheld the assembly government's appeal.

Lord Justice Pill, sitting with two judges who heard the case in Cardiff last week, said former rural affairs minister Jane Davidson acted lawfully when she refused to make an exception for Shambo as a sacred bull.

The judge said: "I have come to the conclusion that the minister was entitled to make the decision she did in regard to the very considerable problem presented by bovine TB.

"The decision to eliminate the risk by slaughter and not to permit an exception to the slaughter policy was, in my judgment, justified.

He said the decision was justified even though Shambo's slaughter would be considered by the community as a sacrilegious act and "a very grave and serious interference with their religious rights".

But reacting to the decision, Swami Suryananda of the Skanda Vale Temple said the latest court decision seriously disregarded the principal tenets of the Hindu religion.

"We are devastated that an animal in our care might be taken away for slaughter, even though it hasn't yet been proven to be a threat to anyone.

"We have consistently asked for other tests to be done to verify if Shambo does have bovine TB.

'Uniform approach'

"It seems ridiculous to kill him and then carry out a post mortem to confirm if he does or does not have TB."

Ramesh Kallidai, secretary general of the Hindu Forum of Britain, said killing Shambo would be a "grave desecration".

He said: "To kill such an important symbol of the Hindu religion on the basis of a subjective and unreliable test is not only incomprehensible but also sacrilegious."

However, NFU Cymru president Dai Davies welcomed the decision, saying there must be "consistency and a uniform approach to upholding the law".

Mr Davies said: "As a farmer I have every sympathy with anyone who has to have their livestock slaughtered due to bovine TB, however TB must be eradicated..we can't have exceptions to the rule."

The spokesman for the Welsh Assembly Government said it had been a "difficult case" for all involved.

"We are glad that the court has accepted the important public and animal health arguments in this case," he said.

"We will now be looking to move forward but it is not possible to give any timetable at this stage."

The spokesman said they aimed to work closely with the community to resolve the situation "with the minimum of distress to the animal and its carers."

Shambo is removed for slaughter

Shambo the "sacred" bullock has been taken for slaughter from a multi-faith community after police were drafted in to remove protesters.

The Welsh Assembly Government said Shambo had to be destroyed after testing positive for bovine TB.

More than 100 people joined worship at Skanda Vale in Carmarthenshire to try to slow Shambo's removal.

Earlier, officials were forced to obtain warrants to enter the site, then had to call police to clear the area.

At around 1925 BST, government officials loaded Shambo onto a trailer and drove him away.

The six-year-old Freisian, who is officially registered as Bullock UK 742266 200001, was expected to be taken to a local abattoir for a lethal injection.

It ends a protracted legal battle which started when a TB test returned positive in April.

The removal came after the community finally lost their High Court fight on Monday.

Temple monks had originally been told Shambo would be moved at 0800 BST on Thursday, and they began their protest early outside a temple housing the bullock, isolated from other animals.

Officials turned up to request entry to the site, but were refused as they did not have a warrant.

Shortly after 1400 BST, they returned with two official warrants, but then immediately left the site after failing to gain access for a second time.

At about 1600 BST, police used bolt cutters to get through the gate and move their vehicles - including an animal trailer and four riot vans - onto the site.

More than 20 police officers then started leading or carrying away worshippers from their position directly outside Shambo's enclosure.

Speaking after she had been moved, Christine Hough said there was no need to put Shambo down.

"He is sacred to these people - he is not in the food chain," she said.

After Shambo had been taken away, community leader Brother Alex said the group had done its duty.

"We did everything we could to uphold the sanctity of life," he said.

"Shambo was not a risk to anybody. To suggest he was a risk to other animals and other people is absolutely false."

In a joint statement, the assembly government and Dyfed Powys Police said it had been "an extremely difficult operation for all concerned but handled efficiently and with great sensitivity by all agencies involved".

"Despite a large number of people present, the animal was removed from the site without any injury to it or to people present."

Earlier, an assembly government spokesman said officials had to wait to be denied access before they could obtain a warrant, adding its main concern was to "minimise distress as much as possible to the animal".

Protesters were moved by police officers

The assembly government said it was aiming to protect human and animal health and appealed for co-operation, but the monks had warned officials they would have to interrupt worship to remove the animal.

Supporters from as far afield as New Zealand and Switzerland took part in a pooja ceremony celebrating the sanctity of life at the temple enclosure.

An online petition attracted 20,000 signatures and the bullock's supporters were able to keep up to date with events via a webcam, although the monks said the site crashed for a period on Thursday due to the number of visitors.

But the monks faced opposition from many quarters, including the farming sector, where Shambo was seen as a disease risk to livestock.

Brian Walters, vice-president of the Farmers' Union of Wales (FUW), said: "We have to follow the rules like everybody else and I won't say we don't have sympathy because the farmers who've lost cattle do sympathise."

Last week, a High Court judge gave the community hope when he ruled that two slaughter orders for Shambo "were unlawful and will be quashed".

But on Monday, his ruling was overturned by the appeal court in London.

விலங்குகளுக்கு ஏற்படும் காசநோயால் பாதிக்கப்பட்டிருந்த அந்தக் காளையை கொல்வதற்கு எடுத்துச் செல்லும் பொருட்டு இரண்டு பிடியாணைகள் பிறப்பிக்கப்பட்டிருந்தன.

முன்னதாக வேல்ஸ் சட்டசபை, நோயினால் பாதிக்கப்பட்டிருந்த அந்தக் காளையை கொல்ல உத்தரவிட்டிருந்தது. ஆனால் அந்த உத்தரவை நிறைவேற்ற இன்று ஆலயத்திற்கு சென்ற அதிகாரிகளை அந்த ஆலயத்திலுள்ள இந்து மத குருமார்ககளும் பக்தர்களும் திருப்பியனுப்பி விட்டனர்.

இதையடுத்து அரசு அதிகாரிகள் அந்த பிடியாணை உத்தரவை அந்த ஆலயத்தில் ஒட்டிவிட்டு திரும்பிவிட்டனர். அதிகாரிகள் அங்கு சென்றபோது ஆலயத்தில் சம்போவைச் சுற்றி அதை காப்பாற்றும் முகமாக நடைபெற்றுக் கொண்டிருந்த ஒரு மதநிகழ்வில் நூறு பேருக்கும் மேலாக பங்கு பெற்று கொண்டிருந்ததால் அந்தக் காளையை அவர்களால் எடுத்துச் செல்ல முடியவில்லை.

பின்னர் மாலையில் மேலும் சில போலீஸாருடன் அரசு அதிகாரிகள் வந்துனர் எனவும், ஆனால் ஆலயத்திலுள்ள இந்து மதகுருமார்கள் வாகனங்களை நிறுத்தி சாலைத் தடைகளை ஏற்படுத்தியுள்ளனர் என்றும் பிரிட்டிஷ் இந்து அமைப்பைச் சேர்ந்த ரமேஷ் கல்லிடை தமிழோசையிடம் தெரிவித்தார்.

அந்தக் காளையை அரசு அதிகாரிகள் எடுத்துச் செல்வதை தடுக்கும் முகமாக நூற்றுக்கும் மேற்பட்டவர்கள் அதைச் சுற்றி மத வழிபாடுகளை நடத்தி வருகின்றனர் எனவும், அவ்வாறு வழிபாடுகள் நடைபெற்றுக் கொண்டிருக்கும் சமயம் அதில் குறுக்கிடுவது இந்து மதத்தவரின் உணர்வுகளை புண்படுத்தும் விடயம் எனவும் முன்னதாக ரமேஷ் அவர்கள் கருத்து வெளியிட்டிருந்தார்.

எனினும் வியாழனன்று மாலை பிரித்தானிய நேரம் 7.30 மணி அளவில் வேல்ஸ் அரசு அதிகாரிகள் ஆலயத்திலிருந்து சம்போவை கொலை செய்வதற்காக ஒரு வண்டியில் ஏற்றிச் சென்றனர்.

பிரிட்டன் முருகன் கோவில் காளை சம்போவுக்கு மரண தண்டனைஊசி போட்டு கொல்லப்பட்டது

லண்டன்: இங்கிலாந்து முருகன் கோவிலில் உள்ள சம்போ என்னும் காளையை கொல்ல பிரிட்டன் நீதிமன்றம் உத்தரவிட்டது. இதையடுத்து இன்று அந்தக் காளை ஊசி போட்டு கொல்லப்பட்டது.

இங்கிலாந்து நாட்டின் வேல்ஸ் நகரில் பிரசித்தி பெற்ற கந்தவேல் சுவாமி கோவில் உள்ளது. இங்குள்ள காளையின் பெயர் சம்போ. இதை பிரிட்டன் வாழ் இந்துக்கள் புனிதமாக கருதி வழிபட்டு வந்தனர்.

இந் நிலையில் சம்போவுக்கு காசநோய் ஏற்பட்டது. இதனால் அதைத் தொட்டு வணங்கும் அனைவருக்கும் டி.பி. நோய் பரவ வாய்ப்புள்ளதாகக் கூறி, அதை கொல்ல வேண்டும் எனக் கோரி இப் பகுதி விவசாயிகள் நீதிமன்றத்தில் வழக்கு தொடர்ந்தனர்.

இந்த வழக்கை எதிர்த்து இந்துக்கள் பலரும் கோர்ட்டில் மேல்முறையீடு செய்தனர். பிரிட்டனில் வாழும் லட்சக்கணக்கான இந்து மக்கள் சம்போ காளையை புனிதமாக கருதுகின்றனர். சம்போவை கொல்வதன் மூலம் இந்துக்களின் உணர்வுகளும் கொல்லப்படும் என அவர்கள் குறிப்பிட்டிருந்தனர்.

ஆனால் வழக்கை விசாரித்த பிரிட்டன் நீதிமன்றம், பிற மாடுகளுக்கும், மனிதர்களுக்கும் காச நோய் பரவாமல் இருக்க வேண்டுமெனில் சம்போவை கொல்வதுதான் வழி. இதில் சம்போ காளைக்கு விதிவிலக்கு அளிக்க முடியாது.

சம்போவை கொல்வதுதான் இறுதி தீர்ப்பு எனவும், இந்த தீர்ப்புக்கு எதிராக பிரிட்டன் பார்லிமெண்டின் மேல்சபையிலும் முறையிட முடியாது எனவும் தீர்ப்பளித்தனர்.

இதுகுறித்து முருகன் கோவிலைச் சேர்ந்த சூர்யானந்தா கூறுகையில்,

சம்போ காளைக்கு முதலில் காசநோய் இருக்கிறதா என கண்டறிந்து, நோய் இருந்தால் சிகிச்சை அளிக்க வேண்டும். அதை விட்டு விட்டு காளையை கொன்று காசநோய் உள்ளதா இல்லையா என பரிசோதிக்க உத்தரவிடப்பட்டுள்ளது தவறான செயலாகும். மனிதர்களுக்கு நோய் வந்தால், அவர்களை கொன்றா விடுகிறோம், சிகிச்சை அளிப்பது இல்லையா என்றார்.

இந் நிலையில் காளையை கொண்டு செல்ல நேற்று அதிகாரிகள் கோவிலுக்கு வந்தபோது அவர்களை பக்தர்கள் தடுத்தனர். ஆனால், அவர்களை அப்புறப்படுத்திவிட்டு காளையை அதிகாரிகள் கொண்டு சென்றனர்.

உயிரினங்களை மதிக்கவேண்டும் என்பது மத சம்பந்தமாக ஏற்கலாம். ஆனால் குறித்த காளையின் உயிர் தான், பாதுகாக்கப்பட வேண்டும் என்று கோருவது, மிருகங்களில் கூட உயர்ந்த, தாழ்ந்த சாதி வகுப்பை ஏற்படுத்துவது போலாகிவிடும்.
